Possible Petrol Blockades

Recommended Posts

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4221296.stm

I know these had a huge impact on the country last time, I hope the government does something about it as without fuel my partner doesn't work and he's self employed so won't get an income :tearful: Might be worth preperation just incase, keeping an eye on the news for what is happening etc as I know last time there was no milk or bread etc deliveries near me apart from small local bakeries and bakeries inside stores like Sainsburys. Also if children travel by taxi I know some most firms Durham closed last time.

Last time the protestors caught the country by surprise. With a weeks's warning and the experiences of five years ago I am sure the police etc. will be much better prepared.

Well fingers crossed it will not happen again, one thing I cannot understand though is that most Farmers , i might be wrong here , use deisal and get levy for it . We don't have a car or anything like that , but my children go to school by school transport with an escort and last time it came very close to them running out of fuel, the protesters unfornately do not think of things like that.

It cost me 63.00 to fill the car up today :( ....unfortunately we live miles from any shops and have to travell by car to get anwhere(no public transport), we have no pavements or street lights. So I,m dusting of my old bike and slipping on those bike clips  .....hope it does,nt happen like 5 yrs ago we only have 2 petrol stations in the closest town, 6 have closed in recent years.

Farmers do indeed have red diesel, which is tax free, to use on their land. It's a very serious offence if you are caught running a vehicle on red diesel. I don't understand why other industries that rely on fuel are not allowed to use red diesel (hauliers for example).

It's worth noting that, unless you have a catalytic converter, it's perfectly safe to use 4* in a car that normally runs on unleaded.

They may have given notice but thats what happened last time, everyone panic buying.

I hope it doesn't disrupt anyones children getting to school etc as I know how much that can upset them, especially in the first few weeks back

Food bought....

Car full....

Why....MrQ away for the weekend......lol

Serious though.........

Why do they tax fuel so much....because they can.....

Though if something is not done soon, many people will have to choose between food or fuel.....Mr Q ask if he can work from home two days....to save fuel

Thing is the more tax they put on fuel the more transport companies etc will need to transport stuff like food, so the prices will go up to cover costs, we'll pay in more ways than people sometimes realise.

I have just seen one of the protesters talking on Sky news , he says 99% to 100% of the population support the protests.

I have a question or two for them and all the people that are supporting the petrol protests , if indeed it is 99% at least of the country that are backing them .

I would like to know how many of the protesters and the population that are backing them voted for the government in the last general election as that was your chance to really get rid of them ? I don't support the protest as I or my wife don't drive and , even though we have two children with dissbilities , we could do with a car I suppose at time but it is so expensive to run a car we don't bother , besides walking is good for you and keeps you fit , and stops you putting on the pounds lol.

Fuel prices are so daft that I had to persuade my boss to increase our fuel allowance at work as it wasn't covering basic costs ? he has done, by 5p a mile. We run two cars and I'm sure the only reason it hasn't gone over 1 a litre here in Newcastle is because there are not enough digits on the price boards!

I'm fuelled up but I can't see things being as bad as last time as I don't think they're blockading the oil refineries this time. I wonder if the problems the USA is having with its fuel following the Katrina disaster will have an extra knockon effect?

Daisy

The latest round of price rises is due to Katrina, many refinieries had to stop production, hence restricted supply and prices rocketing.

The oil companies have passed thison to the consumer, and the traffic lobby are asking the Government to reduce taxes to keep the prices down.

Personally I have mixed feelings. Petrol prices are high enough to cause many people difficulties, but in a planet with declining resources making sure everyone can use as much petrol as they want without incurring financial hardship isn't sustainable either.

I agree, and where did they get the idea that 99% of the population is backing them?

Does anyone remember being asked their view on this by the protesters?

A lot of my relatives are car drivers-but my dad had to give up driving years ago because of the rising cost.

I personally think,if the person can afford the car, insurance exetera and there are other transport means available then they cannot complain,it's only those who live in areas without public transport or small businesses who rely on their own transport that are severely affected by this.

I don't think it's fair on other drivers when protesters hijack petrol pumps and roads, because they don't want to pay the extra cost even though not all drivers are supporting them-it had a spreading effect onto other people and potentially causing fatalities-yesterday in Merseyside the emergency services phone network was close to collapse because of the amount of people ringing 999 asking where can they find available petrol.

This is the beginning of the end. The fact is, oil reserves are running out fast yet demand for oil increases day by day. Last time round it was OPEC who jacked up the price of crude. This time it isn't. Demand is outstripping supply.

The price of petrol and the amount of tax on a litre is disgusting. If the tax on petrol was used to fund research into alternative fuels then I wouldn't mind paying 95p a litre. However, the government isn't funding ANY research into alternative fuels and the petrol tax is used as a general source of revenue to pay for public services or government pet projects such as the war in Iraq. I see this as an outrage.

Why isn't the government funding any research into alternative fuels? Simply because of downright greed and selfishness. They want to see Britain as a nation fueled by petroleum because otherwise they will lose a lucrative source of revenue and have to raise other taxes. Another reason is that Labour has never cared for the environment. They are a party built with support from dirty old coal miners and smoke belching heavy industry. If Labour really showed its committement to the environment then they would abolish duty on chip oil used as fuel but they stubbornly won't.

The cost of petrol and diesel is going to rise and in 5 years time could be as much as 1.50 a litre. Shifting people out of cars into public transport is not a solution under the present system because buses and many trains burn diesel, so if the price of crude rises then the price of bus and train tickets also rise. When oil runs out public transport will stop apart from electric trains and trams. The development of alternative sources of energy is long overdue and I urge that you do not vote for a political party at subsequent elections unless they are 100% committed to developing alternative energy solutions.

I tried to post an objection to the phrase 'dirty old coal miners' but the board froze on me, again !!

I think we have a lot to thank them for, although the fact that lots of us can now afford to have a car and use petrol wouldn't be seen as much of an argument here !!

My science teacher claimed the coal miner's unions delayed the development of alternative energy in Britain. France and Iceland have no fossil fuel reserves which resulted in their nuclear and geothermal energy programmes.

Short term political gain is often detrimental to long term solutions of the world's problems. In this case it is developing alternative energy solutions for road vehicles whilst accepting losing much of the revenue from fuel duty.
