more advice needed please

Recommended Posts

since june G has seen a case worker from camhs and been observed by a specialist teacher.

he is waiting to see the speech and lang people (approx beg oct) and the phsyciatrist (approx end oct)

the specialist teacher, in her report, said the SENCO could refer to a local outreach worker for IT support in the class and the educational phsycologist.

today the SENCO tells me that the head has agreed to the outreach worker but doesn't think its necessary for the ed phsyc as he is getting enough input from other people. the senco asked if that was ok, and said she also didn't see the need for the ed physc. i said ok but now i've had time to think i'm not so sure!

1. camhs must have made the suggestion for a reason

2. who is the HT to decide if further input is needed?

SENCO also said she is expecting outreach worker to come in and advise some computer programmes that G could use in the computer suite......i was thinking more along the lines of computer access in the classroom

i have tried to ring the spec teacher but she is unavailable till tomorrow.

just wondered what you experienced people would do? :)

Jools has G got a statement? My son's school decided that he didn't need to have input from an Educational Psychologist because he was already see the Psychiatrist at CAMHS and they felt that it might replicate or work against what she was doing and also increase his anxieities.

When the school applied for a statutory assessment there was no evidence of input by an EP and I was told that assessments are usually refused on this basis. In the end, the LEA have agreed to assess because they accepted the reasons why there was no EP input, but I would be very wary.

The truth is the school is only allocated so many EP hours and they probably want to use them for someone else. I agree CAHMS wants G to be seen by an EP so G should be seen by an EP.

Hi Jools,

I think that in the Psych world, there are different disciplines and that an Ed Psych has to have been a teacher at some previous stage in their life. If the CAHMS Psychologist is a Clinical Psychologist, then I am not sure that this would be enough as I understood that it is the Educational Psychologist who observes and assesses the needs of the child and recommends the provision needed in the school setting. I don't see why your child can not be seen by two different psychs - they have different roles to play.

The chances are that the clincial psych will not make recommendations for the school setting, therefore the school do not need to comply! I would not be at all surprised if this was not the ulterior motive.

Best wishes

HelenL

can i insist that the EP comes into school?

the specialist from camhs used to be a teacher.

she also sits on the statementing panel.

she is coming into school to see the SENCO to give suggestions for him

i do think school will be a battle.

he seems happier in this class so they think there is nothing else to do!
