Kathryn Report post Posted September 7, 2005 Hi Tracey, It does cause a bit of weight gain but can be an effective short term measure for extreme anxiety. When one stops taking it the weight returns to normal. Please PM me if you want more info, K
bevalee Report post Posted September 7, 2005 Hi Tracey My son has been risperdol for about 6 weeks now. Our psychiatrist told us that he could put on some weight, he said it would be about 10-14lbs. He only takes 0.5mg twice a day and the difference in him is remarkable! Its really helped him, he's like a different person. And its made my life much less stressful too! Elanor Report post Posted September 7, 2005 Hi Weight gain is a common, but not inevitable side-effect. My son has put on quite a lot of weight - which worries me enormously - but it has levelled off, and on balance the advantages of the treatment so far outweigh the problems. Risperidone (Risperdal) is very useful in some cases - especially aggression. However, there are alternatives (anti-depressants) for stress that might not have the weight risks. I'm currently thinking about trialling prozac, instead of the risperidone. You could try it out - the drug metabolises fairly quickly, so if you daughter does gain weight she could come of the treatment and settle back down within a short period. lil_me Report post Posted September 7, 2005 (edited) My sister takes it as an antipsychotic treatment, she hates taking it as she has weight issues (thinking she's overweight at a size 6 ) She says it makes her hungry constantly. tracey Report post Posted September 8, 2005 Thanks for all your replies It sounds as though risperdol has helped many kids Unfortunatly weight gain would cause more stress for my daughter she is in her teenage years and looks are everything She worries about her weight anyway and either wont eat (not very often) or eats for England It looks like risperdol is not for her At the moment I am looking into homeopathy Any views ?
