Help needed....

Recommended Posts

Well I go into school today as Nick was getting bullied ie one brat who is friends with our neighbour from hells brats has been getting other kids to take great delight in kicking Nick in the back stomach ribs etc then again at the beginning of this week more of the same so I go into school to see what is happening with his supposed lunchtime supervision.... only to be told that the head mistress checked Nick over and found an old bruise by his spine but no other signs ??? what gets me is that she didn't find the need to inform me of this ????? I did stress my concerns and said I think more supervision was needed and she should inform me of things like this in future... isn't it amazing in the form of political correctness etc covering backs more like it how teachers etc do not like the word bullying any more they are not allowed it seems to admit any kind of 'rough' behaviour is going on in their school !!!!!

Well the main thing I need help on is that when I am in there the head teacher turns around and says that they were expecting a lady from autism outreach to come in today to see Nick except she phoned up late last night and cancelled saying that as Nick no longer has a diagnosis of autism ???? that they were no longer needed to come in !!!!!!!!!!! they turned round and said that all he had was a speech and language problem... if this is the case then why have speech and language signed him off their books ???????

I have phoned up the main consultant who he was under to ask for another meeting as I am now in total :o:angry::wallbash::tearful::wacko: etc as to what is going on and also to complain that they listen to someone who sat in the same room with Nick for 5 mins on 1 occasion to be able to make a diagnosis just like that.... FUNDING !!!! thats what it comes down to... At the time Nicks consultant said don't worry he will still get all the support he needs and his statement still stands... but it seems as if he has lied as slowly they are withdrawing all Nicks support.. :crying:

In the meantime Nick is suffering....

I am going to start writing a diary of Nicks peculuarities and then I can ram that up this stupid clinical psychologists **** .

What can I do any advise on what I can do would be greatly appreciated... what gets me is that all the people who first said something about Nick and aspergers have all retired or are in the process.

He has seen people ranging from the consultant, a peadiatrician, salt, educational psychologist.... etc - all who brought up the fact that Nick has aspergers or certainly fits the criteria - baffling.

Anyway I am still awaiting that phone callfrom the consultant and then go from there.....

Well just had the phonecall and the consultant a very nice man is going to forward and speak to his replacement as he is retiring in 2 weeks time !!!!!!!!!! yet another retirement, he has re-iterated that Nicks needs are very complex and he even said that in one paragraph Nick shows significant difficulties in word finding and needs instructions broken down into smaller tasks for him to be able to comprehend and execute them he continues to exhibit impairments in social communication, initiating conversation, in social relationships or social interaction and maintaining friendships- and that help should continue.... and then in the next paragraph says that although a checklist for autism diagnosis did not show that Nick fulfilled diagnostic criteria it is acknowledged that nicks problems are complex and that he has special needs which demand 1-1 attention at school and the current services should continue etc... ?????

All what they say in one part as a yes they take away in another... this kind of thing reminds me of the blasted e additives fiasco of a few years back when they decided to start calling the e-additives by their full long name instead of the e no. as people were becoming more aware of the e.nos problems..... still amounts to the same thing except now its funding...

sorry i am rambling now as i am so fed up.... they are dropping my boy in the thick of it and I am scared for him now and his future.

I really don't know where to start. What an absolute flippin' mess! God only knows what the hell they all think they are playing at here. The best advice I can offer is to ask for a second opinion. Insist that the person giving the second opinion is ASD trained, a normal 'run-of-the-mill' consultant simply isn't going to know enough (unless you strike lucky).

Good luck.

Phasmid have to agree what a complete fiasco. I had a slightly similar problem with my daughter who has a condition which according to the first consultant she saw, caused autistic 'type' symptoms. Well you would not believe how quickly the LEA jumped on that one. They were unwilling at first for anyone from the specialist autistic team to visit her in school as she did not have a dx of ASD. Her neurologist at Great Ormond street went absolutely mad and phoned lots of people on my behalf. Her opinion was just because daughter doesn't match all of the criteria she would benefit Immensley from the specialist team coming into school. Someone now visits twice termly. Hope everything works out for you. I think its a case of trying to find the right person to help you, they must be out there somewhere!

What a mess - but you suggest in your posting that he has a statement in place - therefore I would think that the are legally bound to implement this until the next statement review where his additional/new complex needs can be taken into account. I would see how the new consultant is - perhaps request an emmergency appointment or telephone consultation .

On the subject of the bullying then I think its time to play hardball with the school. Keep records and take photos of any scratches and bruises - and send a letter to the school each time to create a paper trail. A friend of mine had similar problems with her cerebral palsy son being bullied - all she got from the school was the type of 'boys will be boys' and it' just boys larking about'. So she contacted the head and told her that if there was anymore bullying she would be contacting the police about assault charges since the school seemed to powerless in this matter - the bullying was immediately clamped down on and supervision improved - if the head doesn't want to admit to bullying - chances are she definitely won't want coverage in the local paper.

I know im going to sound a right pain in the backside. However, Im going to be straight with you. You sound a bit like things have all got on top of you and come over as a wee bit aggressive. Believe me Ive been there and got the T shirt!!!! I found that I was letting my anger get the better of me and hence putting the back up of the school, etc, etc - even though I knew damn well I was right. My advice would be to try and stand back and see yourself as others see you. Ask the advice of friends as to how you should go foward. Write out things you want to say before you have meetings - and stick to it. Its hard to argue with the voice of reason - its easy to dismiss a 'neurotic' mother.

Sorry if I sound harsh - have just learnt from experience. Good Luck x
