if your child behaves in scool quite normally , does this mean it can not be adhd. or should i say if hes wild at home and acts ok in scool ,they say hes fidgety n wonders off but his behaviour is controllable ,

has learning diffs and limited att span. just wonderin havnt got dx yet ,consultants mentioned a few things, damp dyspraxia and adhd, just wonderd wether cud rule adhd out as my friend said that they have to be bad in scool. shes not an expert but also heard this off some one else .just wondered if anyone cud shed a little light . been getting dx for last 18 mths seems like forever

Abnormal behaviour is usually first noticed at the age of three to four years. The behavioural problems are present in more than one setting. For example, if symptoms were present at home, there would also need to be problems in school and/or in social situations for a diagnosis of ADHD to be made.

then it is possible ADHD (or ADD-if he isn't hyper) if he fits the criteria and other conditions are ruled out or found.

The fact he is wild at home,might be stress from coping with the school day?

Mmmm, well my son was diagnosed with ADHD at the same time as AS by the specialist diagnostic centre who really know their stuff.

 

We had always had the classic 'fine' at school, 'human tornado' at home, but they still recognised his ADHD at the centre. We had to complete endless questionnaires rating his behaviour, impulsivity, etc.

 

It might have helped that his ADHD was evident at other assessments, eg OT, SALT, etc.

 

Now that he is 16 the physical hyperactivity is no longer evident, although he does sometimes act impulsively. And he literally bounced off furniture when he was little, and was unable to concentrate long enough to take in behavioural therapy without using Ritalin too. Stopped Ritalin of his own accord at 14, and absolutely no adverse reaction

 

So, it does get better!
