ceecee Report post Posted December 14, 2005 MP ***** ***** spoke up during a debate at Westminster on special education needs to argue for a more specialised service to assist the parents of children with autistic spectrum diorders. He has dealt with a number of such cases as part of his constituency work and brought this experience to bear during a debate on the subject During the debate M>P>*** ****said my experiences as a constituency m.p. lead me to believe that many parents of children on the autistic spectrum fall between three stools. They are batted between the education service, the health service and social services departments and they are constantly frustrated about being sent back and forth from one to the other almost on a permanent loop. He asked whether it was agreed they needed to reorganise the resources to provide a bespoke service for the parents and children, who are badly let down by the current system? Speaking afterwoods he added We have to do better than we are at present for both autistic children and their parents.I have raised this point in parliament before and i will go on raising it until i see some positive change. I will also make representations to the council about this as I know some of our senior county councillors are concerned about these issues too. I'm interested in your viewpoints.I cant really comment myself as neither of my children are on the spectrum.Just wondered what others thoughts and feelings were. Is it as i suspect all pie in the sky
Viper Report post Posted December 14, 2005 Hi Ceecee, Who is the MP, I'm sure you can say on here they are in the public eye afterall. On the face of it it sounds very encouraging and he/she has got a good grasp of our problems. I hope he/she does get the point across and it has some benefit to us. Fingers crossed. At least it's being discussed in parliament and that can only be good? Viper.

littlenemo Report post Posted December 14, 2005 Don't worry, ceecee, it was already on public record and as it was published, it's not invading his privacy. Is he a Tory, or one of the 50 Labour rebels who are campaigning against the proposed education changes? While he is talking about services across the board and the way that ASDs fall through the cracks in all of them, it would be interesting to know if he has seen how the proposed changes are going to make things far worse. The debate was presumably an Education one... (sorry, got distracted there, just had to spend 10 minutes explaining "fall between three stools" to Com ) Who knows? If he pushes hard enough, the creation of a co-ordinated system for autistic support could be used by Labour Central Office as a sop to buy some back-bench votes in the Education vote. Whether it would work any better than the present system is anyone's guess, but then I'm a cynic when it comes to government. That said, the piece does remind us of the use in writing to our MP's with our complaints. If we all did it more, something might change

Viper Report post Posted December 14, 2005 It might be worth writing to him to give our suport. I can't do any harm and it could give him more incentive. Viper.
Hectorshouse Report post Posted December 15, 2005 (edited) I think that everyone should write to their MP, after all they are 'meant' to be our advocates, imagine if we all hassled our MP's in all our boroughs, when they meet up for a cosy coffee in old parliament house they can share they're woes of being contacted by blumming ASD parents ... and them all you going ... 'what you as well?!? .... must be a conspiracy' or they might actually do something about it ... Just a thought ...
