Hello,

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have been toying with the idea for a while now and reading about Asperger's. The more I read, the more I find that I fit the description almost perfectly.

I'm 28 and I work as a software developer.

Without going into much detail, these are some things I have noticed about myself:

- I have a fixation with detail

- I'm high functioning in things like writing, maths and computers

- I have poor social skills and I am socially anxious

- When I speak I sound very "geeky"

- I have little respect for authority which has landed me in trouble with my parents, teachers, police and work bosses throughtout my life

- I'm disorganised and forgetful

- I'm an easy target for bullies and "trolls"

I'm looking to find out more about Asperger's, possibly try to get a diagnosis and meet some people with similar traits to myself. I have noticed there are a lot of people posting here about their children, but are there many adults with ASDs here? Where do they all go?

Hello Rob and welcome to the forum. There are plenty of adults here with ASD's. I am sure someone will be along to talk to you soon.

Hi Rob, and welcome!

As for where they go, generally nowhere unless we can help it!

Having a vitual community on here is great, beacuse you can talk to people about all the stuff that matters without actually meeting them, which suits me fine. I've gone on to have children also on the spectrum. The one who is most like me I can relate to, but as no two are the same it's a great place to swap ideas, which is why you see so many people trying to make life better for their children.

Hope you find plenty of support on here.

Hi

It has been pointed out to me that I may have AS when doing some voluntary work for the NHS.

I found some of the groups run by NAS useful to study others and just to make sense of my life. But the group DANDA Developmental Adult Neuro-Diversity Association

46 Westbere Road

London NW2 3RU

Phone 020 7435 7891 mary@pmcolley.freeserve.co.uk

is a wealth of infomation I found it much better than NAS for infomation. They have good info sheets on traits and local groups.

Do not listen to GP (General Prat) if he tells you you are to be referred to Mental Health for a diagnosis - this is not what they are speciallists in. You need to be referred to a psychyatrist (forgive spelling) who specialises in AS. My GP has said that the PCT s have cut that service and refuses to refer me. If you try do use the NHS Advocacy Service- there should be one in your area -they will help determine weather this is true or not this is just about where Im at at the moment. Or it will cost about a ?1,000 to go private. Its almost unheard of to get NHS referral as they consider that you have managed on your own so far - so why do you need a diagnosis now? Have some good arguments ready! And they dont have the money. Good Luck.

Everyone is different and has different TRAITS. Were not all the same and I met people with Dyspraxia and some traits of AS (which he had a diagnosis for). Im positive I have AS and possible ADHD. So its been long journey. There is a book called Pretending to be Normal -- Jessica Kingsley Publishers - they do a lot of Autistic Spectrum Disorder books .

I do think it is disgusting the amount of adults that come onto this forum and want/need a diagnosis and are fobbed off by their gp because it comes down to money or because they have managed so far. :wallbash::wallbash:

It's hardly helpful is it.:angry:

Its taken me so long to get this far and Ive had an extreamly 'difficult' life self medicating - this is an understatement! Certain stimulants dont affect me in the same way as other people.

Would like to try Ritalin but without a diagnosis theres no hope and online medicines are expensive

?70 for ritalin. I also have arthritis - another reason to try the drug to prevent me doing too much more

damage to joints. The amount of damage Ive done to my body by incredible amount of physical manual work over the years I can directly link it to the ASD and a difficult family life. Working till I drop and working to escape emotions etc

But with knowledge and the help of others think I can get there somehow. ie try ritalin if it works then go private - get diagnosis and get medication! Ill get there in the end. Meditation helps but only to a point.

This is a nice site quiete informative.

Wow :) What can I say? Thanks for all the replies and advice. I didn't expect to recieve so many helpful replies and so much advice. It looks like I have come to the right place.

I have also been refered to a psychiatrist via my GP but I found the psychiatrist to very unhelpful. I probably had about 10 minutes of his time before he decided I was unsuitable for help on the NHS :( I left feeling angry and frustrated that my efforts to get help and my condition were not met with any kind of understanding. Just because I have (barely) coped so far doesn't mean I don't need help and support.

I will certainly try the National Autistic Society Helpline and the DANDA.

In the mean time I'll try to check in around here from time to time.

Thanks again :)
