statement query

Recommended Posts

I have begun to realise that my dd's statement is pretty useless. Unfortunately when it was first issued I had no idea of what it should be like. I remember being so grateful that she had actually got one it didn't occur to me that it might be useless  I'm afraid it has lots of will have access to and wll benefit from  I won't bore you all with the details as I have got someone at IPSEA who I'm hoping will have a look. One of the points on the provision to meet needs and objectives is *** will have access to teachers who are experienced in developing and delivering programmes for pupils with social/communication and language difficulties. Does this mean one of the specialist ASD teachers. This was copied and pasted from the original EP report. When the annual review comes up I so want to tie this up so it is so water-tight they can't wriggle out of anything. When I went on the ace web site and had a look at the leaflet about checking proposed statements there were so many things I never did :(

Guys - is there not something wrong with the principle that we should have to check statements :crying:

I think when we get them, we are so grateful and count our blessings and we don't imagine for one minute that we would get stitched up by the LEA - after all - aren't our kids some of the most vulnerable little people in society - so - it would not occur to us that people would not be doing the right thing by our kids. :crying:

we've just, after 5 years, got the LEA to amend Com's statement.

Part 3b went from half a side to 3 sides and the LEA ASC advisor has never seen such a detailed statement, but we still feel it isn't up to scratch.

We asked for these amendments at a meeting about an exclusion (we'd been told it was an emergency review but arrived to find it wasn't so we did it anyway!) and I basically went to IPSEA, ACE, etc and a copy of the code of practice and wrote it myself (Phas helped out and I used things from other people's statements that I'd seen, thanks, HH and Tez) and simply presented it to the meeting (after a long 'parent's advice' letter explaining to the responsible officer exactly why he needed the amendments).

The RO went away and we got the proposed statement back almost word for word but with all the time allocations taken out and some very slight but significant word changes.

It also resulted in him moving up two bands on the funding scale which is great as the school had no idea that would happen so they're really pleased with me for once

Ipsea actually told me that it was highly unlikely that the LEA would cooperate unless he had full reassessment - must let them know :D

Anyway it's been back twice since then with nothing much changing except for S&L therapy being added which they had always refused before and we hadn't even asked for this time :o (very pleased, just puzzled - they don't often give you a freebie!) so I think it's probably time to accept it for now - only a term till his next review

Good luck - it's not easy but it can be done :D

My son's draft was absolutely dreadful too, as a matter of fact IPSEA branded it an illegal document. They (and all those wonderful people on this forum) have adviced me to re-wrwite it, which I am doing but it's such a mammoth job. Having only seen one other statement, I would soooooo love to see one that actually works, so I have something to go for. Anyway, IPSEA says that when I have the meeting with the LEA on this, I should just make itr very clear that their own version is such an illegal one we could take them to court over it, BUT if they're willing to cooperate and take all my suggestions on board...

This shouldn't have to be this way though, as Helen says, we shouldn't have to check the statements, let alone re-write them altogether... There are so many people out there who don't know all this, nor have the back up like I have with this forum, and all those children and their families are missing out, it is so sad :crying:
