Blood tests

Recommended Posts

After apt with doctor for a neurological examination

I was told my daughter could have a blood test for

a chromosomal analysis since there is an increasing number of areas

on different chromosomes which appear to be associated with autism

anyone know anything about these tests as I am abit baffled

Hello

J had the chromasomes test and that tested normal but the specialist then referred us to the genetics specialsit and has tested my DNA to see if I am a carrier of Fragile X because if J has FX then I will be a carrier,

so I have been tested first, if it is I am a carrier J still might not have Fragile x but they will then test him and then if we want we can have other members of the family tested too as there is a history of Learning Difficulties and ADHD and ASDs in our family.

make sure you clarify the kind of test because I waited a long time to be told Js test was a chromasomes test not a fragile x test and had to then go throw a longer wait, my results are due in a few weeks time.

I went to hospital expecting J to have his DNA tested meaning another blood test wich he was not very pleased about but after some questions about my family and there problems he said he wanted to test my DNA for Fragile x and my smile vanished but Js was wide as a joker as he didnt have to have his bloods taken but I did.

I am kind of a bit worried now incase there is something wrong with me!

Anyway there is some really good websites on fragile X and it is a condition that has gone unrecognised for generations, only now are more and more children getting tested.

There is sutle behaviours too from mild to severe, some have facial features some dont, so you cant always go by what someone looks like, but many do have autistic traits, attention deficit disorder and learning difficulties.

It is quite common to do a chromosome analysis after diagnosis. When 'A' had his test done, the general analysis results came back before the fragile X analysis.

The fragile X analysis came back fine, but the general analysis showed a chromosome abnormality. 'A', DH and I then had to have blood tests to focus on this particular chromosome. Parents are tested to show whether the abnormality is inherited, or a mutation.

But even with abnormalities, it does not mean that there is going to be a problem. If the abnormality is a rearrangement, the it could well be balanced (no genetic material lost), and therefore have no effect on the individual.
