  2. My son is now refusing to take his eye q liquid, so bought some of the smooth stuff - i had a taste of it and i though it was horrible. Bribed my son to take some. Is it ok to mix this stuff with other yoghurt or something?
  3. Re toilet training - my little cherub is still doing the toilet everywhere apart from the bathroom! don't know where my pun came from..................
  4. Hello Thought I'd start this thread. Not matter how big or small your moan is. Please feel free to reply to this. Might make you feel a wee bit better. 2 days until my son starts school - feel as though i am turning into a nervous wreck! Elaine xx

  6. Hi LKS Thinking of you. Elaine x
  7. Hello Don't know what is wrong with me at the moment. Jumping down my hubbie's throat..................... Suppose everyone gets their off days................ Trying to toilet train and Matthew keeps doing the toilet all over the carpet and keeps taking his boxer shorts off. He starts school on thursday for the first time and i am dreading how he is going to be. At the moment he is at split nurseries - 3 days at a local authority nursery and 2 days in a private nursery. I think it will be better for him once he is in the one place. Moan moan moan Elaine x
  8. My little boy is going to a special school - all the children are on the spectrum. He will have his teacher and also a nursery nurse. I am hoping that he will come on leaps and bounds. The change in him since his diagnosis - is amazing. At school - hopefully he will be totally understood and they will know where he is coming from! Elaine
  9. Hello I was speaking to a lady who helps my son today. She said that these type of jobs are also advertised in libraries - which i am going to look into. Not sure if this is just in Scotland or all over the UK. She also said that i could phone the education dept and ask for an application form and then i would go on a waiting list. Elaine x
  10. Hello I go for quiet get togethers for Matthew's bday with just a few selected people. This year, I spread the birthday guests over a couple of days as this went well. He can't cope with alot of people around him. This year we went to the zoo with my parents and he really enjoyed himself - though he freaked a bit at the start as the zoo was really busy. From now on that is what i am going to do - staggered birthdays! Elaine x
  11. Hello My son had to go into hospital to get 11 teeth removed. He has a reflux habit and this has erroded his teeth. By the way - does anyone elses children do that????????? It was the same hosp as the one that he got diagnosed with autism. Student nurse was taking notes on him - she sort of assumed that he was toilet trained. I said - he is still in nappies. I then said he has got autism and i got no reaction from her. She then asked more questions and again i said he has got autism. She said em what is that? so I explained to her. Unbelievable - you would have though that they could have read his hosp notes before hand. ........................ Elaine
  12. One of my friends at work knows a girl that works in a special school. I am going to see if she has any contact names and I will phone the school direct! Might also phone the group that helped my son and see what they say. Becky, I would have loved to come and work with your son but I live in Edinburgh and it might be a long long way away from where you stay. Will keep you all posted on the job front! Elaine x
  13. My little boy is going in for a full day on Thursday and then half day on Friday. There are only going to be 5 or 6 in the class so hopefully he will thrive. Been looking at the price of school uniforms ie polo shirts and jumpers em school are wanting 9 each - em I think not. Have gone to Tesco for his school stuff. I was reading a newspaper today and Tesco got the best review for school clothes! Elaine
  14. Hello I was wondering if anyone could help me. I have decided that I want to work with autistic children. Have been told by the people who work with my son that I would be really good at it - (sorry for the big head) I am having trouble finding out information.......... I have applied for a classroom assistant job to work with autistic children and as of yet have had no response. I don't know if it is because I don't have any childcare qualifications - just an honours degree in accounting! Any info would be most appreciated. Elaine x
  15. Hello Think i am getting a bit stressed about my wee boy going to school NEXT Thursday............... Elaine xx
  16. Hello Thanks for your replies - feel alot calmer about toilet training. As well as trying to train my little boy, my little toddler is getting toilet trained as well. When he is out and about (at nursery etc) he is in his nappies but when he is in the house - he wears his big boy pants! Whilst on holiday, he went to the toilet himself. Back home, whilst in the garden, he will sometimes pull his pants down adn do the toilet in the garden - so from this i can tell that he is clicking! Elaine x
  17. Hi Stephanie It is a fish oil supplement ( omerga 3) It can help with concentration etc. My son is now pronouncing his words alot better and seems alot calmer. I first saw it on a BBC documentary and thought I'd give it a go. I have put my little boy on this and the difference is really positive. Though, it may have an adverse reaction to other children.. If I was you, I would give it a shot and if it does not work then at least you tried it. Elaine x

    DLA

Hello When we initially applied for the DLA we were turned down. We chose to appeal and there was a care organisation in Edinburgh called The Action Group. They helped us fill in the appeal form. If we were turned down again, we were going to go to appeal again. Seemingly, it is quite common for the DLA to turn down applications. To be honest, I didn't have the strength to appeal but this organisation helped us and we won! Elaine
  19. Hello Re the toilet issue. Not really had any experience of this as my son is not toilet trained yet. However, maybe he is getting confused by the toilet rules ie being allowed to take all his clothes off in his own house but not anywhere else? Maybe just a thought, but whilst he is in his own house, can you maybe try just letting him take certain clothes off and leaving others on? It might take a long time for this to click but everytime he achieves this - you could reward him.................... just a thought. re the washing machine - you could always try my "song" on him. Though not sure how old he is - my little boy is only 5. Re the hoover, I leave mine in the livingroom so that it is not hidden away and I play games ie pretending to suck my wee boy up with it - gosh I sound mad! Though it worked!
  20. Hello What a nightmare. Maybe you could contact the national autistic society who might be able to help you? They have a counsellor service and they may be able to point you in the right direction. Let me know how you get on. Elaine x
  21. Hello I tell my little boy that he is getting his fish medicine. He has been taking it for a quite a while now and there is a very very notable difference in his behaviour and language. Elaine
  22. The school that my son is going to is just down the road from my house. I have been taking him there over the past wee while to run about the playground so that he can get used to things. I told him that the next step was to be going through the school door. We arranged the visit and i will be perfectly honest, i was dreading it! However, i was gob smacked with my little boy! I explained that we were going through the door - which he accepted (no lying on the floor), Met his teacher, took teacher's hand and then happily went into the classroom. Played with the toys and then went for a tour of the school. The little cherub then asked to go back into the classroom - his teacher was gobsmacked and so was I! No fuss, no nothing - told the teacher that we had been coming down to play around the school when it was closed and he thought this was a fab idea! I strongly recommend it.
  23. Hi Lil_me What is your son scared of and I will see if I can think of any ideas.................................. Elaine
  24. Hello I would love to hear from other people whose children are starting school in August. My son is going to a special school for autistic children. We were very very lucky to get him in there as there was a very very high demand! Elaine
  25. Hello My son used to be terrified of the washing machine - I couldn't put it on when he was in the house so when he went out it was like a laundry. Also put washing machine on when he was sleeping upstairs. Recently, I have been telling him that there is a wheel in the washing machine ( he loves wheels) and we sing the " wheels on the washing machine go round and round" - same tune as the wheels on the bus! Everytime he gets upset when the washing machine is on, we start singing this song and he is not upset/scared anymore! Also hoovers, I have let him play with them and then make a game ie kidding on to suck him up - again this has worked. Suppose it is just finding out what makes him tick! His daddy is well impressed with his clever mummy! Elaine
