  1. I am currently doing this course, personally I don't think it's great in terms of dealing with my ASD son but it's a good way to meet likeminded parents and support each other. I was expecting the course to be quite condescending which it isn't at all and I can see how a lot of the strategies could work but all children are different and the behaviours that my son displays I don't think can be helped by doing this course. This is my opinion and other parents may find the course very helpful.
  2. Wonderful news, I hope you don't have to wait too long for the appointment.
  3. Many thanks folks, I know this is probably an unusual question and I appreciate your responses.
  4. Our 8 year old son with Aspergers would like to do his cycling proficiency at school. I believe the course is usually run by parents. We have only told close friends and family and people on a need-to-know basis i.e. teachers etc, about his Aspergers. I am wondering whether the parents taking the course would be told about his Aspergers as I have been trying to avoid it being spread like wildfire gossip. I have heard some of the Mums talking about other children with disabilities and it's not pleasant, they can be very unkind and judgemental. We have made a conscious decision to only tell those that really need to know as he is very high functioning. Just wondering if anyone has had experience of this?
  5. Hello, Just wanted to say thank you for sharing such a lovely and positive post. We all strive for our kids to feel happy at school. You must be over the moon. Wallace and Gromit
  6. Hello Princess, Nice to meet you and welcome, we're new to the forum but it seems fantastic. Wallace and Gromit
  7. We have an 8 year old son, newly diagnosed with Aspergers who does not seem to be getting a lot of support in school. He's currently in a smallish primary school which consists of about 200 children (chosen specifically because we didn't think he would cope well with a bigger school). I don't think the school has had a lot of experience with autistic children. We currently live in Hampshire and the Educational Psychologist we used advised us that it's pretty much impossible to get a child statemented in Hampshire with ASD unless you take the authorities to court. We've already had one battle in getting our son diagnosed and don't really fancy taking on a court case. We've decided to look at relocating anyway and are just wondering if anyone has any experience of the support services available in Dorset. We particularly like the Dorchester/Weymouth areas. We realise that the help available seems to be a bit of a lottery but would appreciate any help/advice on this matter. I know everyone's ideas of help are different but I am thinking in terms of support in schools, is it easier to get a statement?, are there support groups down that way? Any help/advice/suggestions would be gratefully received. Many thanks, Wallace and Gromit

Hello and welcome, We're new here too - seems like a great forum. Wallace and Gromit
  9. Hello Kat, Welcome, we just joined this week too. We have 3 children, I aged 8 recently diagnosed with Asperger's in July and 2 NT children, a boy aged 6 and a girl aged 4. This does seem like a really good place to get help/support/advice from likeminded people. Look forward to getting to know you. Wallace & Gromit
  10. Hi, Just wanted to introduce us. We have an 8 year old boy recently diagnosed with Aspergers', he also suffers from anxiety and a sleep disorder. We have known for about 4 years that our son is a little 'different' but struggled to get taken seriously by our GP so wasn't given a referral, we then employed an Educational Psychologist privately which got us our referral and our our son was finally diagnosed at the end of July this year. We also have 2 other Neurologically Typical children, a boy aged 6 and a girl aged 4. Life has changed somewhat this year as we have realised how little support there is for those that need it, and how much you have to fight to get anything, it's certainly an eye opener. One of our son's main issues is tactile sensitivity and socks and school uniform create a lot of pain for him, we have had extreme outbursts due to texture that he cannot cope with. On the plus side, he is very high functioning, very honest, bright and trying to learn computer programming. He's going to be a geek we expect and we are very proud of him. We decided to join this forum, both as a way to give and receive support from others in similar situations. We look forward to getting to know you. W&G
