  3. Hello everyone, My son does all the above - Stimming is as smileymab write is quite normal, sometimes anxiousness may make the stim increase , stimming can and is soothing and the older the kids get they seem to be able to control the stimming (i can) apart from times of extreme anxiousness. My son has motor tics (tourettes) in his eyes the intensity and frequency of these change considerably if placed in a situtation unfamiliar. I have placed here a little information for you to peruse at your lesiure The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders , 4th ed (DSM-IV-TR). for Tourette syndrome is as follows for making the diagnosis: Diagnostic Criteria for 307.23 Tourette's Disorder; ? both multiple motor tics and one or more vocal tics must be present at the same time, although not necessarily concurrently; ? the tics must occur many times a day (usually in bouts) nearly every day or intermittently over more than 1 year, during which time there must not have been a tic-free period of more than 3 consecutive months; ? the age at onset must be less than 18 years; ? the disturbance must not be due to the direct physiological effects of a substance (e.g. stimulants) or a general medical condition (e.g. Huntington's disease or postviral encephalitis) I have placed the following link in case you would like to look around the official toutrette's http://www.tsa.org.uk/what_are_the_first_symptoms_.asp Steve.. 6. Hello everyone, Sorry the following came through to me yesterday, but I overlooked it however it seem this is better late than never A SCOTS family will launch a multi-million-pound lawsuit at the High Court in London today, claiming the MMR vaccine was responsible for causing autism in their child. The test case, which could open the floodgates to hundreds of similar actions, is set to reignite the fierce debate over the safety of the mumps, measles and rubella jab. for the rest of this news article http://news.scotsman.com/scotland.cfm?id=115342006 Steve.. 7. Hello everyone, I wanted to share this information with you all, I was told earlier today that my homepage on my main site has been accessed 4,000 times since I started four months ago, this makes it worth while doing, this is the part that I wish to share with you more than anything -Actually if you consider 500,000 peoples lives are reported to be affected by ASD's as quoted by NAS, if my site is accessed on its present monthly figures that would mean it would take over four thousand years to reach the same amount of people as those whose lives are affected in some way by it - that brings it into perspective just how big the problem is don't you think.Your thoughts please it even makes me think a little. 9. Hello everyone, While using other forums I have found that a great many professionals out there still don't understand, for instance here are just a few unbelievable replys by these so called professionals when seen by a person with AS. "why would you want to be diagnosed with that for?" "Asperger's can be like Depression, sometimes you just 'think' you have it.." "Asperger's is only a kid's thing, it's a pretty meaningless thing to diagnose an adult with." "You don't have Asperger's Syndrome, you make eye contact." "Asperger's Syndrome? What's that?" With remarks like these it is no wonder it is a constant uphill battle to create and promote awareness, it's unbelievable that comments like these are made, the sad thing is these are made by so called professionals - who I may add seem to know more and more about less and less, untill eventually they will know sod all. 11. Hello everyone, Personallly I feel intellegence quotent tests are ok in the correct context in which they are originally intended. There are infact a great many available to do while perursing the internet however, there are people out there that do indeed have high IQ results, but it would seem that these particular people do more and more of these particular tests and quite simply become better at them and as such the resulting figure obtained is not a true reflexion of ones capabilities. My own is high but if you mention this to others in the course of conversation, all this seems to do to most people is give them fuel in thinking most Asperger people are to clever for there own good, some people are even threatend that some one on the spectrum has a higher IQ than they do,and other coments like that. However not all people are like this, this point I must make clear Steve.. I think the boy means well but he is distinctly inclined to be inattentive...... 12. Readers whose understanding of autism goes little beyond Dustin Hoffman's performance in "Rain Man" or Mark Haddon's "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" will find Animals in Translation (Harvest, $15), by Temple Grandin and Catherine Johnson, a revelation. for the rest of the story use the link http://www.cleveland.com/entertainment/pla...3710.xml&coll=2 Steve.. As Zemanski wrote the best course of action is to firstly speak to your GP, however not all GP's are familiar with ASD's I have also placed a link for you to peruse and print , take it with you incase your GP is unfamiliar it is Important facts about autism and Asperger syndrome for GPs http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=128&a=2225 Hope these are of help. 19. Hello juju, My name is steve have AS, my son is 7 yrs old, he has AS also, one of the other problems we have is with hearing, this is a condition called Hyperacusis which is an abnormal acuteness of hearing due to increased irritability of the sensory neural mechanism; characterized by intolerance for ordinary sound levels. This can sometimes be for us a contributing factor to our sensory overloads, due to the fact some sounds can be unbearable and others just really hurt. I am also aware of a CD which is possible to purchase called Pink Noise which is basically white noise cleaned up, the result is pink noise which is then used to build up a tolerance to the everyday sound of white noise. A good resource site on the subject of Hyperaccusis its research and treatment can be found on www.hyperacusis.org hope this is of interest. ps.. Pink noise: A test signal used to evaluate the acoustics - the low, mid, and high ranges - of a concert space. Officially it is modified white noise - creating a sound that has been brought to an equal energy level per octave as that of the human ear. With regards to AIT I have placed this link for you to peruse as far as I am aware I seem to recall http://www.light-and-sound.co.uk/ at this centre uses both Light & Sound Modulation systems, the whole process is based on the original works of Dr Tomatis and also the originator of AIT Dr Bernard. I have just checked through the links on my own website and found this piece thought you may find it of interest : Research shows that about 17-20% of all children with autism will also have hyperacusis. Common signs include crying in noisy environments, clasping hands over the ears, fear of noise or noisy objects, self-harm when exposed to loud noise, i.e. vacuum cleaners, and reluctance to participate in noisy or loud activities, i.e. watch parades, birthday parties, musical presentations, etc. Children with autism or autistic-like conditions may fluctuate in their ability to hear or tolerate sounds. This confuses the diagnosis, which can also be complicated by the potential difficulty in obtaining subjective data from the child in a sound booth or other measuring system. Many times, it is subjective observations from parents, teachers, or care givers that is used to support a diagnosis of hyperacusis. for the rst of this article use this attached link http://www.hyperacusis.org/wst_page6.html Hope this information is of help. 21. Hello OPooh, I mention on my own forum regarding this film, worried at one point that AS would be flavour of the month due to how we are seen if we have a special talent on which we focus. Mozart and the Whale a film about the lives of two people who have Asperger syndrome, the film is loosely based on the lives of Jerry Newport and Mary Meinel who both have AS Jerry, uses another forum which I frequent he is much respected. This film is set to do for asperger syndrome, what the rainman did for autism, I feel this film will bring lots of awareness of asperger syndrome throwing it into the public eye while at the same time bringing it under closer scrutiny, I really hope it shows a fair representation of asperger/savant syndrome and that it will not just focus on the talents that sometimes come with this disorder I myself am fasinated by numbers and for many years thought this was the case for most people, only to find out it not so. The film Directed by Petter Naess, stars Josh Hartnett (Donald) and Radha Mitchell (Isabelle) Jerry is a maths savant, Mary is a savant artist she paints using boths hands at once, Jerry speaks and states he does feel it is a fair representation of asperger/savant syndrome as their views were taken on board while the film was made which after all is looosely based on the lives of these two autistic savants here is a quote of Jerry's regarding his love for Mary Quote "She's the kite and I'm the anchor. I didn't know how to hope, and all she could do was hope. ... I wake up and I feel like I?ve won the lottery and I didn?t even buy a ticket" Jerry Newport. If you wish to read more about the connection of asperger and savant syndrome check out the link below to my own site, the information placed there on Savant Syndrome was given to me to use on my page by Dr Darold Treffert who is the world?s leading expert on the autistic savant syndrome. http://www.colour-se7en.co.uk/asperger.htm Steve..

  23. Hello everyone, Thank you all for your thoughts, I would like to share mine with you on this- Most parents it would seem are all too well aware that, all funding that should be in place in order to give teacher's and LSA's support with regards to Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD') is simply just not there, these very teachers and LSA's are also aware of this. However it would seem the only people not aware of this are the very people with which the book stops, the governing bodies and departments who all too often only step in as a last resort or token jesture. Personally I feel funding and support should be readily available in order to give, teachers and LSA's a complete and basic understanding and awareness. Parents of a child or children with an ASD will apprieciate and understand, when I state that for most with autism, what a teacher or LSA may through no fault of there own see as disruptive behaviour is more than likely possible to be a sensory intergration difficulty. So until this is better understood, by the people who spend the most time (second to family) with our children these sensory issues will always remain to be misconstrude as being disruptive behaviour. I hope that soon, it would be possible for LSA's and teacher's to attend courses, not unlike the N.A.S.Early Bird Plus program- which will enable them to gain a good basic understanding and awareness enabling maximum potential for all our children, as they all deserve and are entitled to the best education possible. Please for those who dont know allow me to leave you with this information. A person/pupil with Aspergers/Autism will not set out to make a teacher's life more difficult, they do not even try to manipulate or scheme. More often than not the behaviour displayed could be sensory issues, confusing situations that may leave the individual disoriented and even frightend, the very virtue of an ASD disability is egosentric, with difficulties being extreme when reading the reactions of most people. 24. Hello everyone , Here is a news story that I feel you should read, please give feedback on this I will be very interested on your views. THE increasing number of autistic children in mainstream education is leading to rising classroom indiscipline, a new report has found. Academics at Glasgow University were commissioned by the Scottish Executive to assess the implementation of its mainstreaming policy. http://news.scotsman.com/education.cfm?id=63402006 Steve.. 25. Hello everyone, Article of interest, I wonder about the outcome hmmmmmmmm. interesting. major survey on autism is to be carried out across European Union member states to see if the condition is reaching epidemic levels, it emerged today. Disability rights campaigner Kathy Sinnott said the European Autism Information System (EAIS) project, which has ?480,000 in EU Commission funding, will discover how common the condition is. The MEP, whose son Jaime suffers from autism, believes there is no reliable data available to determine the incidence of the disorder, which experts say is on the increase. Ms Sinnott said: ?Research in the US has shown that autism levels have risen from four cases in every 10,000 children to an alarming 30 to 60 per 10,000 children, which would officially classify it as an epidemic. for the rest of this article use the link. http://breakingnews.iol.ie/news/story.asp?...444&p=y689z8y5x Steve..
