which way forward?

Recommended Posts

what or who? is the best way to get my dd investigated for asd without the input of her school?

she is 5.5yrs and has recently been discharged by paed. (because of the school lack of knowledge and support of my concerns,) she is under o.t for suspected sensory intergration disorder, i dont want to go to her paed for a review as she believes schools know best.

my younger dd who is 2.5yrs has been referred to a different paed. should i get my older dd referred to them as well.? i hope to get my younger dd investigated by a multi-disap. team.

im going to the gp on wed. and not sure which way forward, i have just wasted a year because of the school interfearance.

Ask you GP for a second referal to another Paedatrican. All people are entitled to a second opinion if they are not happy with the first. Ring up your local ASD group and they may be able to tell you which people are more recommended in your area.

I am slightly confused because a paediatrican does not normally make the diagnosis it needs to be someone from psychiatry. ASk you GP to refer to someone in this area.

By the sounds of the school it would probably be better moving her to a school that is SEN friendly because if you do get a diagnosisl, the school will not co-operate. Your child either has problems at school and the school are ignoring her. Or there is not a problem with your child.

Mothers instint is normally always right.

It was a long process for my son to be diagnosed with asd(about 18 months) he is nearly 6, as there has to be different individuals involed. The educational phycologist diagnosied him but he had teachers, sentass peadiatricion and me all involved and lots of reports. I would ask for a different pead though because a lot of the diagnosis is based on their assesment too.

A paediatrican works with school age children. They work in the local clinic with the school nurse. They assess children with problems. They are not experienced to diagnose ASD and normally refer children with these concerns to the paediatric psychatrist who specialise in mental health.

The paediatric psychatrist will interview parents at a clinic visit. They cover everything from pregnacncy, delivery, what the child was like as a baby, during toddler stage, nursery, school etc. They will also go into school to observe the child. They monitor the child in clinic several times before giving a diagnosis. Hence you get a more indepth assessment and diagnosis or non diagnosis which ever is appropriate.

Hedders if you find a child psychiatrist and get an appointment .They will be able to direct/reffer you to a SALT with specialist experience of ASD.They would assess speach and understanding as part of the assesment. Our Psychiatrist referred Ben for an ADOS as part of the assesment.

Psychologists observe behaviour, identify difficulties and help parents and schools in managing difficulties. They have psychology qualifications.Ed Psychologists also have a teaching qualification and extra training. However some have more knowledge of ASD than others. They are not doctors.Hence they may be involved in assessment and reffer children on when they are concerned. However it is usually a psychiatrist or a child development team who Dx.Karen

i never heard of asd till a few months ago, because of my concerns with my dd, supportive parents group who i seek alot of advice about her school sent me info on asd as they picked up some charactistics, when my dd was referred to a paed in march she didnt say anything apart from she may need to go to a special needs school, i was so confused and worried i phoned her a few days later but she wouldnt say what it could be.

in some ways i feel that i let down my dd by not knowing, i know she acts differently to others, but she was my 1st it wasnt untill my 2nd dd was a toddler i noticed she was displaying same symptoms, she has repetetive speech, sensory issues and iam now starting to recognise repetetive behaviour patterns, i cant believe its taking me this long and feel that maybe i didnt know my dd that well.

i dont think my dd is in the right school but untill i know maybe it is something i cant look for another school, the headteacher and salt made me feel so bad a few months ago saying that i should go to parent craft sessions, and asked if i get angry with my dd just because i went to the gp with my concerns.

i never said that she is naughty and feel that they have judged me wrongly, when the paed assessment was sent to school i was called into a meeting with the headteacher who said its all my words and not true and told me to talk to other parents!

i did report her to the education department, which she now tries to belittle me at school !
