cat scan!!!!!

Recommended Posts

hello,ok things have improved slightly at home since last wednesday although my hubby thinks im in the middle of a nervous breakdown due to the fact that im not sleeping, eating etc...and spend much of the time in tears.my turn for a meltdown.lol.anyway we had the school action plus review yesterday and saw the intervention officer basically she says the local cahms team are talking poo.seeing as how they told us on tuesday that they have decided aaron is not asd or odd(???????????)dont know what changed their minds i thought the ados test determined that but apparently not.anyhow, she said we need to take things a step further and would like aaron to have a cat scan.i was like yeah whatever dont care anymore.i just am so used to these people telling me here is the light at the end of the tunnel, grab it,and then when i do they snatch it away again.so i have become blase about it all.but i didnt ask why a cat scan.so if any of you have any ideas as to why please reply and give me a clue.

im sure you have all felt as i do now.i know im shutting myself down im protecting myself my hubby says from all the stress.but whatever the reason i seem to not care anymore.about anything.i dont get dressed i dont eat i dont sleep,im off sick from work,i spend nearly all day everyday crying.my dr.wants to put me on anti-depressants.whatever.

cahms have offered me counselling,i accepted it,i go next tuesday.

maybe they will have a magic wand and wave it all away.but i think not.my m-i-l,is still banned from the house.good riddance.

WHY IS IT SO DAMNED HARD TO BE A MUM.

ok rant over.

so if anyone knows about this cat scan please reply and fill me in.thanks for reading this friends.

Hi Becci,

To be honest, I have not known anyone that has been requested to get a Catscan if their child is ASD or any other difficulty. I know a lot of parents are looking at MRI's because they are much more detailed. Perhaps you should go back to this person and ask them to explain why they recommend a Catscan, and what their knowledge of it is, and why, they suggest it.

If a child is presenting with behaviours other than ASD they can be helpful in giving more information about what is going on, but this is not the normal process specialists go through to do assessments IMHO.

MRI is much more thorough and I would be requesting one of these over a Catscan anyday.

I am actually thinking of getting one done on my son, to get a better picture of how is brain is functioning. But again, this is only because Neurologists are getting more and more information from MRI's that are helpful and useful.

Other than that go back and ask this person why??? What will it tell me???? Why a Catscan and not an MRI. If not happy with their response get a referral from your GP to a Paediatrician and write down a diary of your childs behaviours and get some advice from the Paediatrician, they are very clued up about ASD and be very helpful in what is best for your child.

F xx

This is wierd!!! is the Intervention officer a Doctor? If not, they have no right to request any medical proceedure...that is the job of the paediatrician or other medic looking after him. Anyway, a CAT scan only shows physical abnormalities....and is also a damn big radiation dose. Its about as much use as a chocolate teapot in diagnosing ASD. There is work going on involving functional MRI which show the brain actually working but it's mainly research at the moment. Methinks the IO is talking from her bottom!!

I just looked up a job description for an IO...and no...she's not a Doctor...so she's talking b*****ks!!!

As a former radiographer I am appalled that this IO has suggested a CAT scan ... no investigation should be performed without the necessary indications and a risk benefit analysis ...

a CAT scan would involve a large dose of radiation (medically speaking) and would only show up any physical features - that's why they should only be used if indicated - the radiation dose received would be seen as valid if the CAT scan confirms or denies a suspected diagnosis - which it is extremely unlikely to do in the case of ASD's

MRI scans show slightly more functional detail

PET scans (specialised and horrendously expensive) would be the best way to investigate function and physiology.

That said - you could ask why she recommended this investigation. Would be good to see her squirm.

I think your hubby might have a point here.

You sound as if you are depressed and need some help yourself, hun.

Sometimes we can't take all this rubbish that people chuck at us and we need some help to stay strong for our children and ourselves.

Please pootle off to the GP, explain that you cry all the time and can't be faffed to do anything. You are under immense pressure (all the time) and what with all this new stuff going on, it's no wonder you are are struggling.

It's only hard to be a mum because we care....

I had counselling through my local well womens centre (given detail by gp) Id tried nhs but 6 sessions wosnt long enough. It was a 5 per week and money well spent!!!!!!!!!!!Took me a couple of years but well worth it.

I think you are ready for help me daer and anti depressents would be a great help. It not a forever solution just to help you get back on track.

If cahms is ###### look else where for counselling often you can get it subsidised-I did, >:D<<'>
