Help!!

Recommended Posts

My son Nick has not been to school since easter, he goes to an EBD school which is an hour and a half away by mini bus. The trouble is he leaps off the bus when it stops to pick up other children, and i get a call from him asking me to pick him up. The bus has no escort so it is not very good. The school is excellent but we just cant get him there, we have tried a taxi but he just gets out or refuses to go in it. This week he tried going by train with another boy but only managed two stations before he got off and came home.

CAMHS and my social worker both say that Nick needs a residential school becouse of this problem of getting him to school, plus they say he needs 24hr cirriculum as he gets very abusive and violent, the thing is Nicks headteacher has got very stroppy saying they can meet his needs, and unless she says she cant meet his needs he wont get a residential placement.

Does anyone know where i stand with this and what i can do, i do have it in writing from social services and camhs that they think Nick needs a residential placement. He is 14 next week and only has three years left at school, i have looked at a really good school that has places, but i dont know what to do or who to contact. Thank god we do have a statement!!

Sorry to ramble on guys but i am at my wits end and have spent most of the day arguing with Nick and crying, this has been going on since easter and i need things to happen quickly as Nick is getting violent. :crying::crying:

have u tried ipsea??

is there any way your cahms and ss can prove they dont feel the school is meeting his needs?

can you ask the school to prove how they feel they are meeting his needs,

he should somehow still go to school and maybe you can find a school that goes beyond 16?

i have no experience of this, but that is what i think, but someone will come along wih much better help

I think you need to ask for an urgent review to reassess your sons needs, these have changed as cahms etc are saying he needs residental care

this is from the ipsea website

----------------------------------

Ask your LEA to arrange an early review of your child?s Statement

When can I ask for an early review?

At anytime, as long as you have a good reason. The LEA must arrange a review of the Statement at least once every year. But if you believe that there is an urgent need for a change to your child?s Statement you should ask for a review to be arranged as soon as possible.

What would be a good reason for asking for an early review?

You should ask for an early review if you believe:

that your child?s needs have changed and are no longer accurately described in Part 2 of the Statement; or

that the provision in Part 3 of the Statement is no longer meeting your child?s needs.

Should I speak to the school first?

Yes, definitely. Speak to your child?s class teacher and the Headteacher about your worries as well as writing to the LEA.

What if the school offers to write on my behalf?

It is fine for the school to write as well as you if they believe that an early review is needed. But you should also write, as the parent.

Who should I write to?

Write to the top person at the LEA, usually called the Chief Education Officer or the Director of Education. You can find out what the top person is called in your LEA by asking at the school or the local library.

Remember: keep a copy of any letter you send and ring IPSEA if you don?t get a reply after four weeks or if you want further advice.

Model letter

Dear Sir or Madam,

(Child?s name) (date of birth)

Request for an early review of a Statement

I am writing as the parent of the above child, who has a Statement of Special Educational needs and attends .............. school.

I would like the LEA to arrange an immediate review of the Statement. My reasons for making this request are:

I look forward to an early reply.

Yours sincerely,
