DLA Application

Recommended Posts

Hi again everyone, can I ask you all...

I heard back from the DLA today to say they can't process my application until they have more info from school!

If you read my last post you know I am struggling with getting the school to take anything seriosuly, so can I ask what questions the school will be asked? it seems bizarre as many of the care issues such as bed wetting, physio, night splints, etc etc are out of school time, the other things such as attention defecit and behaviour etc, they say doesn't exist even though her physio say it's very apparent.

I am also wondering why they will not have contacted either her paediatrician or the physio as these names were both entered onto the form as being able to give extra information...

Can anyone shed any light?

thanks again in advance (listening to the thuds from upstairs as my daughter gets in and out of bed and runs down the corridor - will she ever sleep?)

It seems they approach the school regardless of who you put on the form for them to contact.

They send a standard questionnaire for the school to fill in, with questions about knowledge of road safety, if the child is a danger to themselves or other people and for details of any extra help the child needs.

Many people's experience is that the schools are fairly rubbish with the forms. My son's application was turned down because of the school form... we were lucky enough to have the decision overturned when I asked them to reconsider but many people end up having to go to tribunal to prove their child needs more help.

Perhaps it would be worth you telling the school that they will be receiving the forms and maybe letting you have a copy of it when they've filled it in.

That way you can submit extra evidence to prove that the school are wrong if you are not happy with what they put.

What a time wasting exercize!!!

My eldest daughter with A/S never had a form sent to the school otherwise she prob never would have got anything! Will they still write to her specialist as well as physio or will they not bother? She sees the physio twice a week and has seen her paed three times in the last three months so they would be able to give real info....

How frustrating!

Thanks for answering me.... anyone else got any advice?

Hi Anne,

Daniel's was refused down to the school report and as you will be aware this went to hearing in the end.

Hopefully this will not be the case for you and with a bit of luck you will be luckier than we were, okay we got there in the end but you could also do without the stresses of this.

I wish I found a rep right from the start, I did find one but quite late into the claim, but they can be very helpful and useful with these forms.

I know of a local one to us if you want to know this, please email me.

When the school filled out Daniel's report they were not fully aware of Daniel's issues, and I still walk Daniel to and from his secondary school due to no road sense, the 'head of yr' added that Daniel was aware of all common dangers, etc, and everything opposite.

This was soon rectified, but only as we were going through the appeal process stage.

I know they do mostly ask the school to fill out the form, but has your daughter a certain member of staff that are aware of her difficulties ? and not the head of the school ?

Do you have a disabilities keyworker for your daughter yet ?

I'm sure they can help too.

Just an idea, but perhaps you can ask for your daughters school records, there may be a small charge for this and you are entitled to ask for these copies, its your right.

There may even be useful information on these records that the school have not mentioned to you direct, so may be worth asking, there is a time limit for these too when you request this, I may be wrong but I'm sure I had read up on this.

If there is anything useful on the records then you have always got this to go by and can be used as evidence too.

Please email to let me know if you want those details for the rep, they are in the region where we live.

Hope all goes well for you, you deserve it, good luck.

Love Di xx

Hi, the form that is sent to the school is very basic questions e.g does the child need help eating, going to toilet, dressing. They also ask if they feel the child is a danger to themselves on the roads (which is ridiculous as how does the teacher know this?). unfortunately the DWP seem to take the professional 1 page opinon above the 40 odd pages written by the parent!!! Its so frustrating. Don't just rely on schools opinion or think that the DWP will contact your consultant/gp (they didn't with my son), instead get as many other people to write and tell the DWP how much care and attention your child needs. Good luck.

my daughter is always covered in brusies from school and a few years ago, fell off a bench and broke her elbow which needed pinning, she never flushes the loo or wipes herself or washed her hands, but schools don't even notice this.. but how are they goign to know that... Funnily enough last week they walked down to the local church, but dd was given a lift by the teacher, not sure why....

I am goignt o make an apt to see the head and list all the things that dd has probs with so hopefully they will include some of them even if they haven't seen them.... I will also make the senco aware of the probs, as she will probably have to fill the form

Di, am still waiting for my dissability key worker I was told last week that the social work dep would contact me in approx 1 week. I am hoping they will be of help. I aso requested the school records last week, i told them they have 15 days to get them to me, they told me that I would have them within the 15 days and no charge would be made for copying!

I can't imagine how they would know about her roads sense, but she has very little! Also the other day she approached a dog that was tied up, and it almost bit her, I have told her so many times about stranger danger and road danger etc but it goes in one ear and out the other...

It is frustrating isn't it? I will try and get hold of my daughters physio and ask her to write a report for me, her specialist I think is on holiday at the moment, I think I will ring the DLA and ask them if they are going to ask for a medical report.. it seems ludicrous if they don't.

Thanks all for you help.

Hi Anne

All the very best with this hun.

I was also lucky enough to have the records with no charges, but some of them were some I had already had too, like copies of the IEP's and so and meetings attended and so, but there was also copies of things I had not seen before, so hopefully these will come of some help to you too.

It was the head of year who filled in Daniel's report for the DLA, he was unaware of Daniel's road sense and this and that, and exactly how are they supposed to know ?. And even medication the head of year had wrote no, okay Daniel takes inhalers, and to me this is still medication, so this obviously was not checked out within the school health doctor's records.

In fact that was a question the tribunal asked me last week, they said that we are saying that Daniel has no road sense, and the school head have said he does, so I said, the school would not have a clue, as they are inside at school and have not been outside the grounds with him, and of course I still walk him to and from school, he is almost 13.

I even said I know my son better than the school, afterall he is my son and not theirs ! I was gettting worked up as if I was not believed, it was very traumatising and it was only the truth afterall, and like yourself we would do anything for our kids to live a normal independent life.

Hope your daughter is okay now over the dog thing, bless her, but I know what you mean, its in one ear and out of the other.

Yes the more help with the form from specialists the better, even if you have to ask them to write on separate paper to the form.

Good luck there and hope the disabilities team will be in touch with you this week, it does sound right, I think we had to wait a week too, and the guy we have for Daniel seem to be okay and very understanding, but in their job I suppose got to be.

Let me know how you get on, thank and take care.
