SEN (information) Bill

Recommended Posts

Just received this about the forthcoming reading of a Private Members Bill which has implications for all children and young people with SEN.

Email your MP to support the Special Education Needs (Information) Bill!

Sharon Hodgson MP is sponsoring a Private Members Bill ? the Special Education Needs (Information) Bill, which has its Second Reading on Friday 1st February 2008. The Bill would place a statutory requirement on the Secretary of State to collect and publish information relating to outcomes for children with special educational needs (SEN). This is important because we can only improve expectations by improving data on children's progress. In order to be certain that the Bill will progress through parliament, 100 MPs must be in the House of Commons on Friday 1st February to vote. Please email your MP, using the text below, urging them to be there on 1st February, and also to sign Early Day Motion 619 to show their support for the Bill. You can find out who your MP is at http://www.theyworkforyou.com/ Email addresses for MPs are in the format lastnamefirstinitial@parliament.uk e.g. Gordon Brown is browng@parliament.uk Many thanks for your support ? and please forward any replies to your email to Jonathan Tanner in Sharon Hodgson?s office - TANNERJ@parliament.uk

Letter for supporter to send to MP:

Dear [Name of MP],

Please support the Special Education Needs (Information) Bill The Special Educational Needs (Information) Bill will receive its Second Reading on Friday 1st February. I am writing to you as my constituency MP to urge you to be present in the chamber to support Sharon Hodgson?s Private Member?s Bill. The Bill would amend the Education Act 1996 to place a statutory requirement on the Secretary of State to collect and publish information relating to outcomes for children with special educational needs (SEN). This is so important. We know that young people between the ages of 16 and 24 are more than twice as likely to have no qualifications if they have SEN. In a report on SEN, Ofsted made it clear that low expectations are a significant factor in the underachievement of children with SEN. We can only improve expectations by improving data on children's progress. This is a chance to make a difference. The Bill has cross-party support and its sponsors include Barry Sheerman, the Chairman of the DCSF Select Committee, and Conservative MP John Bercow, who is undertaking an inquiry for the Government to assess services for children with communication difficulties. Currently there is insufficient information available to adequately identify the scale of SEN within our schools and monitor the effectiveness of the support SEN pupils receive. This information is also needed to improve SEN training for teachers, to develop more specialised support in classrooms and to inform the development of best practice. Sharon Hodgson?s office can give you more information on the Bill and a number of organisations will be briefing in favour of the Bill. Please let Jonathan Tanner (TANNERJ@parliament.uk) in Sharon Hodgson?s office know if you are able to attend the Second Reading on Friday 1st February. Please be one of the 100 MPs we need to make this happen. I would also be grateful if you would sign Early Day Motion 619 to show your support for the Bill.

Yours sincerely,
