Unflavoured toothpaste.

Recommended Posts

After being lectured by our new dentist for the second time I am desperately trying to find a floride toothpaste that doesnt taste minty or of chewing gum ! Also searching for a floride mouth rinse that he says son (13) should use.He cant swish (so to speak)so dont know how will use it anyway. Our previous dentist was pleased he would let me clean his teeth. But new one cant see how asking my son to choose to use mouthwash or have fillings is only going to put him off going completely

How do other people cope with teeth cleaning and fillings etc ?

Hi, I have the same problem with T aged 9, we went to the dentist today and he's got to go back on Wednesday for 2 fillings! Hope this might shock him into listening to me about his teeth. :wallbash: I try to get him to use a strawberry flavoured paste, our dentist said lots of kids don't like mint.

We already use childrens fruit flavour toothpaste but new dentist says not enough floride. Sainsburys tastes nice!and is a gel.

Our old dentist who left thought we'd done well to even get him to let me clean them. He'd been bitten by my son when he was about three so understood how difficult it was to even get the toothbrush in his mouth.

You can get fluoride drops if there isnt enough in toothpaste, but check with your local water authority first, some add fluoride to the water so it may be that you are already getting enough that way.

Hi poppy. In my area there is a specialist dental service for children and adults with additional needswho find it difficult to access dental care.I think they are very supportive. It may be worth finding out if there is anything similar near you.It does not sound as though the new dentist is very helpful.:rolleyes: Karen.

Thanks for advice.

Had floride drops on prescip from old dentist(who left) since v small-not worth using once adult teeth through as only helps while growing.Unfortuate side effect of drops can be mottled teeth which my son has.

Am looking into special needs dentist ta.

Another mum has told me they get unflavoured toothpaste for adults on e-bay so am going to search there.

What would we do without the internet !!!!

You don't need fluoride, it's the devil's work, toxic stuff that does as much harm as good.

We were advised against it by the cranial osteopath J saw for a couple of years, who was researching into dental and osteo fluorosis (weakening of bone tissue due to too much fluoride). We now use fluoride free toothpastes and mouthwash, and at 9 yrs J has the finest set of teeth you could wish to see. Also, you don't need to use much toothpaste, we've been led to believe we should use a whole inch because that's how much they put on the adverts to make it look prettier. A pea-sized amount is ample.

Don't know how that would get your round the flavour aspect though...

If it's mint flavour you are trying to avoid we have found sensodyn original (it's in white and pink tube) has hardly no minty flavour. My boyfriend says he didn't like it but I think it's cos he said it didn't feel like his teeth had been brushed after but my son likes it.

my children have also taken to colgate big teeth mouth rinse which smells of bubblegum flavour, I haven't tried it but thy seem to like it.

Good luck, we are going to try and find a specialist dentist as my son has problems going which makes me avoid them even more, if your son has sensory issues which could be contributing it could be worth getting him to desensatise the mouth area before brushing by massaging around the mouth area and using an electric toothbrush is a good idea. >:D<<'>

Think Arm and Hammer do a bicarb of soda one (definitely not minty though possibly also not very nice either!). And there is one (which might be Sensodyn, which is pink, and tastes quite medicinal (a bit like Dentine chewing gum used to)

Our dentist (who is SEN specilist) said not to swish, but just to spit any foam out, as this left the toothpaste (and hence the flouride) in contact with the teeth longer. Admittedly this was when our 2 were still at baby teeth stage.

Otherwise is it the intensity of the mintyness that is a problem? My little one likes the mild mint ones but not the fresh mint, ultra minty ones.
