helenl53 Report post Posted March 3, 2005 Hi Heve, I have a feeling that I Pm'd you by mistake Since 2002, it is the legal responsibility of LEAs to provide the equivalent of a full time education for children who are out of school for a period in excess of 14 days. This equates to 25 hours per week tutoring - it does not apply if you remove your child from school and they become de-registered from school. Nellie is a gold mine of information and she will probaly post a link on this for you. HelenL
Kathryn Report post Posted March 3, 2005 Hello hev, My 15 year old daughter has been out of school since mid October and receiving Home tuition since November. I was told she was entitled to 5 hours tuition a week although someone else on this forum has said that the official entitlement is 25 hours a week (not sure where that information comes from). It was explained to me that the Home and Hospital tuition service caters for children who are out of school temporarily due to a medical illness (we got it on the basis that my daughter was diagnosed with clinical depression, secondary to her AS). It is not meant to be a substitute for appropriate provision for someone who cannot cope in mainstream. The expectation is that the child will one day return to school in exactly the same circumstances and will have kept up with the work they have missed in the meantime. Our LEA has said that home tuition is the most appropriate provision for our daughter at the present time - I think they are trying to use it as an excuse to avoid providing anything more specialised. In short, home tuition does not automatically mean the LEA will find your son a place, you need to continue fighting on his behalf for this. Home tuition in the meantime is better than nothing, if your son can cope with it, but you are entitled to more than the 3 hours you have been offered. nellie Report post Posted March 3, 2005 Home Tutoring Laws? http://www.asd-forum.org.uk/forum/index.ph...st=0entry9489 I was told by ACE some time ago that every child is legally entitled to full time education, but I've never heard of a child having full time home tutoring. Like Kathryn, I thought the norm was 25 hours but I don't know where I got that information. If a child is having home tutoring because there is no school available then it should certainly be more than 5 hours. I think home tutoring is very intensive, this may be the reason why it is not full time. A phone call to ACE or IPSEA would give you the correct information.
