Are ther any special car seat restraints?

Recommended Posts

My 3 year old is the size of a 5 year old and gets very aggressive. When he is having one of his "moments" I have trouble moving him or getting him safe without him kicking or punching me. This normally happens getting in or out of the car, and once in the car, I can't get him to stay in his seat, after kicking and punching me - he then just takes off the seatbelt and curls up in a ball in the foot well.

So I'm sure there must be many people who have been through this, and was wondering if anyone used special restraints in the car.

I am going to ask OT when I finally get an appointment, as I'll be asking about a major buggy as well. Has anyone had anything provided by OT, or purchased anything suitable?

Thanks

I had a five point car seat harness, not because my lad used to escape, but to support him as he was very floppy in his car seat and would flop out sideways out of his seat belt. Sorry, can't remember the name of the company where I acquired it now, but it is a well-known and advertised specialist supplier. Hope someone knows who I mean, I'll try and remember their name if I can.

Thanks - It would have to be a special lock - as he used to be able to get out of his baby seat with a 5 point harness - and before he worked out the lock, he used to slip his arms up through the straps!

Yes, these harnesses are specially designed for disabled children and inescapable!

My 5yr old has a Crelling Houdini harness, in our cars & on school transport - they are great as the three seat belt buckles are behind the seat, but an absolute nightmare to get on to an unwilling 5yr old when you're on your own!

Also, if your littlie ends up looking strangled by the harness, he may need to sit on a booster seat (as mine does in his school taxi) a great tip, that might save you the trouble we have had, is tie the booster seat to the actual seat in the car - my ds discovered that if you don't it is very easy to get it out from under you and then slide out of the Houdini harness!!

Good luck!

Nikki.
