We're moving. What's a good colour to paint Bim's room?

Recommended Posts

We're moving house in the next couple of weeks. Finally! We're been battling with the defence housing department since March and have justthis week been allocated a new MQ.

I'm looking for advice particularly from any adults with AS. We always decorate the bedrooms straight away and this time I want to find a nice calming colour for Bim's room. He's suggested Blue stripes! lol

Hi, Im going with Js choices here, in his calm/sensory room, Jay choose blues, he has three different shades from Wilkinson, the blues are soo soothing, one is similair to the colours on this forum funny enough, I wouldnt go with stripes only because Jay gets visuals with patterns.

There is some wonderful blue colours now, if he saw a particular blue he could take it to b and q and they match it.

I wouldnt choose red as this stimulates the sences so may be researching what colours effect our moods, we use colour a lot for Jay as it is very expressive.

I moved in May and its been a real journey, he broke his arm a week after, he continued to struggle in his final year at primary and weve fighted for a specialist school in the mix too, he has had assessments and observations and meetings galour and were just finally breathing a sigh of reliefe as things are settling down, now we have got things a lot more sorted out with his education and his arm is now on the mend we are beginning to feel the benefits of a nice new home, its lovely, I feel so happy and its had a dramatic effect on Jay too, a home is very important to the soul.

good luck to your new home.

Blue always seems a good colour for a boys room.

Just done my boy's room, Blue. Very pale blue ceiling, cupboards, door frames and skirting. Mid blue for the walls and a darker blue for the doors (room and cupboards).

Took for ever as I built new wall cupboards, altered a big cupboard, put up selves. Installed more sockets, changed radiator for a more compact one. Also had floor boards up to Chang pluming for hot water system(rest of house) and install new wiring for outside lights and sockets in kitchen.

Then renewed some of old floor board as had been damage by work carried out by previous owner.

Just left with the cupboard doors to make, paint and fit then the job will be finished.

Our last house was painted pink every room the some colour.

Only took me about 7years before the last of it was covered up. then we moved and started all over again.

When I was a child my dad got given a 5 gallon tin of blue paint so everything got painted blue.

Ruby and Lily want blue too, but it's scuppering my plans of putting different colours in the rooms as our youngest daughter is called Blue and I quite fancied a blue on her walls too! lol

You could use different shades of blue in each room!

Blues and greens are supposed to be calming, but I have a red bedroom and it doesn't make me energised or aggressive like it is supposed to. It's bright,post-box red, but isn't too overwhelming as it's an attic room and the ceiling comes down to waist level at both ends, and is fairly low all round anyway. Once you turn the lights off, all colours look the same anyway!

Plain walls will be the most calming, whatever the colour. This would apply to everything in the room - some children's furniture is brightly coloured with pictures on, but something very plain would probably be best. Blue stripes might be too much, but stripes of two similar shades of blue or plain blue walls with a striped border might work well.

Iv just been reminded that my nephew then about 4, was having nightmares, turned out to be the wallpaper in his bedroom that had big pictures of motorbikes or the like, redecorate, nightmares stopped.

Depends if your lad is hypo or hyper sensitive.

Nathans is hypersensitive. His room is palest of lemons, same colour carpet, same colour bed and tiny little glow light plus hummungous sound system (well he is an 18 year old lad  )

Sam is hyposensitive and oh boy he cannot get enough sensory input.

His room is painted in a mix of brilliant neon green and the same orange they use in traffic hazard warnings.

He topped it off with strips of reflective fabric, glow stickers, posters, ribbons, broken lumps of glass that he shines lights through, room sprays and he has to have the radio on almost all the time.

Did I mention the bright red and purple fleece huggies he likes to curl up in.....I get a headache when I have to clean in there but it makes Sam very happy.

You know Bim best, work out if he needs a calm room or a lively room then narrow down the colour choices.

i chose green for mine... only to be kicked out into a smaller pink one (with frilly pink curtains to match  ) i love the green but hate the type of paint used in both rooms. its that light reflecting stuff because we thought it would help with small rooms. it gets dirty very quicly. if i accidentally knock a book against it while reading it leaves a mark and then it bugs me like mad, but washing doesn't help because then the rest looks messy! i like blue but find it makes me spend too long looking at the walls and has to be the right shade or i get really cross, wheras the green is nice, but i barely notice it.

Hi, Ive always given ours a choice of colour for their own rooms. After all they have to sleep in there!!!

You say Bim wants blue stripes? Do they have to be vertical or horizontal? How about some soft wavy stripes in contrasting blue colours - a bit like the ocean. Oooo Im getting all 60 minute makeoverish!!!!

Could look quite calming on the eye though.
