Can any one help?

 

We are having to look for a school in milton keynes after our school told us last week that there school was not the place for our son in sept [i no she not aloud to do this but we have had 2 years of fighting with our son school and can not do it any more.] So we are desperately looking for another school. Our son is going thro the statment process we have tried New Bradwell and Giffard Park, All the other school we have talked to have nol clue bout asd.

 

Please can any one help?

The only ASD/Aspergers school I know of is Walnuts but I know they have a long waiting list.There is The Redway school but its MLD/SLD,which if your son is higher functioning it may not suit his needs.

 

Has he been seen by the ed psych? My sons ed psych gave us a list of schools including those mainstream with ASD units,this may be a more workable option as he may not get the statement in time for September.So I would speak to the ed psych and to assessmemt and monitoring.

So his current school have said they cannot meet his needs? And do the LEA know of this?

What are his diagnosis and needs and what type of school does he need? For example, is his main difficulty ASD, or a specific learning difficulty, or a language and communication difficulty or ADHD or Dyspraxia etc.

If there are a number of difficulties then try to prioritise them in the order of most severity.

 

The link below is for an independent primary boarding school. And I found it via www.crested.org.uk (which is a website for schools that specialise in SPLD (which is often a co-morbid difficulty for those with high functioning ASD or other co-morbid diagnosis). I've never been there, but have heard it is good. I've posted this really just as an example of what is out there.

 

If your LEA does not have a suitable mainstream school, the next school they may suggest is either an ASD unit attached to a mainstream primary or a primary Special School. Go and visit and see if he would fit in. Most special schools (LEA maintained ones) are for children with moderate or severe learning difficulties which may not be the category of your son's difficulties. And ASD units are sometimes for children who are more severely autistic, which again may not be the category your son fits into.

 

I know the school I've posted the link about is probably no where near you (I've not looked whereabouts it is exactly compared to you). But it is one of the few primary schools that has a boarding option. It is much harder to get a primary child into an independent school. If your LEA has an ASD units attached to mainstream primary schools they are also worth a visit. You can phone your LEA and ask which mainstream primary schools have them. This is the most likely place the LEA will want to name as his placement, which they need to detail in his Statement.

 

What stage of the Statementing process are you at?

If all the suitable places are already taken up, which is often the case for children getting a Statement AFTER starting school, then you would need to go to tribunal to seek a placement at either the LEA ASD Unit or LEA maintained special school or SPLD/ASD independent school.

 

But those professionals working with your son should be able to tell you what they are planning. Afterall school breaks up soon and you need to know his placement for September.
