I think the whole point of ADOS is not preparing for it - so they can guage your child's reactions and responses to unseen materials - it is basically a series of games and puzzles

Our ADOS test was just one part of a major assessment - in total out assessment took around 20 hours and consisted of:

-a paeditrician assessment

- 5 psychologist visits of 1-2 hours each with ADOS as one of these and other testing intelligence testing

- an OT assessment

- a physiotherapy assessment in the gym to check motor skills etc

- a SALT assessment including a bilingual assessment

- a special ed assessment in basic age expected study skills

- 2 or 3 school visits by the special needs education expert

- a home visit

- questionnaires completed by teacher TA and parents

When my DD did the ADOS test there were 2 test people - a psychologist and an special needs pedagogue - they also videotaped the results so they could analyse her reactions and speech patterns . The psychologist conducted the test which was a collection of puzzles, tasks and games while the other person took notes. I was allowed to be in the room but asked not to speak or become involved in the test.

There were lots of different tasks – often puzzles and games including making up stories, talking about activities she likes doing sequencing activities, finding differences. M flatly refused to do any of the imaginative stuff - making up stories or play with the dolls - yet managed to find things in the detailed pictures and spot the difference etc that the person running the test had never seen before!!!!!

Hi, I have recent experience of this as my 15 year old DD completed her ADOS on tuesday of this week. Well, I say completed.....there were some activities that she simply didn't want to do, ones involving demonstrsting imagination, eg, telling a story from a book with only pictures, showing someone how to brush their teeth, and making up stories using objects....." I can't make up stories", she said.....but went on to tell them enthusiastically, how she and her friend love writing stories together!! I hope though, that they picked up on this reliance on her one and only friend to show her how things are done......the rest was really conversational, with her reactions viewed from behind a two way mirror, and observed on camera...presumably this was recording her as mentioned in previous post, and she was shown this set up prior to the test so she knew what was going on. The ADOS in her case, is to hopefully back up the dx of AS already given by a paediatric psychiatrist although CAMHS have their reservations about her professional opinion? A lot rests on this therefore, because of this difference of opinion as DD is currently out of mainstream education,in the process of being statemented, and, it is hoped, eventually found a place at a more specialised school.confusing and worrying time! :tearful: we have a 2 week wait to find out what the results of the assessment are.....just hope that stubborn CAMHS can see what everyone else can see, and she goes on to get the much needed support that she deserves..... :wallbash:

Good luck with your assessment....I would love to know how you get on as it's interesting to find someone else with AS DD of similar age!

Beverley, Cheshire.

This is eaxctly what happened to my DD who was tested at age 11

The refusal was interpreted as positive for the autism diagnosis and her problems with completing tasks where she couldn't control the situation (ie base her story on something she already knew)

ahh! Thats interesting, and very true...the stories she writes on the computer with her friend are always the same sort of thing and based on her obsession.....she didn't really tell them this though. judging by your experience, they should interpret this in the same way they did for your DD, however, they did comment that that the results may be affected by the fact that not all tasks were completed? time will tell....

Hi

I know its always hard to receive such news even if it is what you have been expecting, even a year on from Sams diagnosis I still find it hard to accept at times and feel low.

There are many great books at Amazon on autism and some aimed at girls/women on the spectrum may help as she is getting older. The out of sync child is a great book,my mum just sent me a copy,it is mostly about sensitiity issues.

I dont think the school are "trying to do" anything other than to help your daughter they maybe aware of her difficulties in school. They cannot "kick her out" but if they feel she needs more specialist input the first thing will be to place her on school action/plus (if she isnt already) and then apply for a statutory assessment this will highlight her needs as people from outside can evaluate the situation. If she already has a statement and the school think she isnt coping then they should have a meeting with you,the ed psych and autism outreach.
