Butterfly73 says hi

Recommended Posts

hi all,

after some quircks, I do get to introduce myself..

I'm a 38yr old speech/language pathologist and also sensory information therapist.

Eventhough with that background having loads of knowledge and experiences with AS,

it took me till march 2011 to gain some oversight and perspective: Diagn Asperger last month

Somehow I work best with kids who can get frustrated easily..

They notice I respect them, I'm open and understand and address their need, eventhough I can't go along with that several times..The fact of being heard helps a lot.. I give clear choices and responsability, thus also see their self esteem grow :D

why I joined an English forum?! For I also have a sleeping disorder called cataplexy (thus narcolepsy, but not the whole package as in being able to fall asleep at any moment: I have muscle lapses in neck, face, arms when I suddenly have to laugh)

My neurologist knows it's rather common: AS and sleeping disorders. Though haven't met anyone with cataplexy and AS yet.. Thus I broadend my horizon :D

love bfly73

Just tried again and it says "member cannot use the messaging system". Mine seems to be OK, as I got a message yesterday.

Just wondering if there is a blip in the system ... it might be something in the settings :unsure:

Hello :)

Have you looked under notification settings (in settings) for PM?

Mine are all set for "in-line" (just thought I'd add that) ;)

I'm not sure if there's any other options I forgot :lol: this forum updated very recently, and the first thing I did was read every single setting - if you've done that and they all look right, then nothing for it but to wait for an admin to sort it out :P

I wouldn't know what settings to look for, how they're supposed to be to make everything work right, for today is the first day that I can post anything..

Hallo Butterfly en welkom op het forum :)

We are mainly from the UK at this forum. You are very welcome to post here, but if ever you're looking for specific advice about support services, we are unlikely to know what is available in Holland.

I don't know whether ASD and cataplexy is a very common combination because I have only ever come across one other person who has both - that I know of anyway. If you google the name "Jim Sinclair," you will hopefully come across his website or learn more about him.

Thanx Tally!

Oh.. now worries, I know plenty about that in Holland, due to my work as a SALT ;-)

Uhm, a question.. where can I find what all those mountains are about?!

besides that, I find it confusing to see names of mountains just above a certain picture..

Thus I've referred to Fledermaus as Salisbury Hill in an e-mail to mods and I easily see myself adress Darkshine as Kilimanjaro..

:o:huh:

Is that just me, or...

Thanx for your response!

They refer to the number of posts you've made - you will also notice there's a number of dots below the profile picture.

1= Norfolk Broads

2 = Salisbury Hill

3 = Scafell Pike

4 = Snowdon

5 = Ben Nevis

6 = Mt Blanc

7 = Killimanjaro

8 = Mt McKinley

9 = K2

10 = Everest

You are not the first person to be confused about the mountains :)

Hopefully this link will explain it for you: http://www.asd-forum...showtopic=13337

LOL Tally - I've just been digging through posts looking for the ones I couldn't remember and they were on that post all along!

Was BD the first to 'climb' Everest?

Do you actually live in Holland? (sounds dumb - but I remember there being 12 provinces of which Holland is one of them) Just interested :D

Indeed, on the West side, near the sea you have two provinces Noord-Holland and Zuid-Holland (north and south, no not the series..;) )

I actually live more in the middle of the country.. on the edge of "the Veluwe"

(copy/paste wiki: The Veluwe is a forest-rich ridge of hills (1100 km²) in the province of Gelderland in the Netherlands. The Veluwe features many different landscapes including woodland, heath, some small lakes and Europe's largest sand drifts.)

I used to live in Noord-Holland, near Alkmaar.. but near the sea.. also lovely landscapes there, besides the bulb fields ;)

Thanks :thumbs: I like info about this as part of one of my side-lined obsessions. Gelderland always reminds me of the film - a knights tale - even though they pronounce it in an English way - its the only time I've ever heard of it as a place so I guess that's why I remember the film :lol:

Plus I wanted to know if you were just saying Holland because that's what a lot of people insist on calling the whole country :)

yw!

Though in loads (LOADS!) of movies.. when they say someone is from The Netherlands.. somehow he or she always speaks German.. still.... Hmmm :huh::blink:

As for obsessions/ interests/specific focus common in AS.. is there a specific word for that in English?!

I'm rather into vocab, usually get really annoyed if I can't figure out abbrev. and such hahaha :thumbs:

What's yw? :lol: I get the feeling we may have more of these questions about abbreviations ;) never mind I think I just worked it out :wallbash: yw = you're welcome - is that right? :D

Hmm, specific words for those things... dunno... obsessions/obsessive behaviour/special interest pretty much covers it as far as I see it - and they are the words a lot of other people seem to use too :)

You should see my course notes - even I get confused by my own short-hand sometimes :lol:

I can't think of a film I've seen showing someone from The Netherlands before... pretty weird though if they speak German - like seeing a film showing the French speaking Italian - in fact its not just pretty weird - its very weird... :wacko:

In autism we normally talk about "special interest."

"Obsession" works as well, but sometimes has a slightly negative connotation.

Yeah - forgot to mention that :rolleyes: obsession does suggest unhealthy amount of interest - I don't mind using it - because I know that when I have a "special interest" I am just plain obsessive about it :D

Special interest does have less negative connotations though ;)

I've seen A Bridge Too Far. How true-to-life the Dutch dialogue in that?
