Feeling disheartened

Recommended Posts

Thanks Lisa I just hope that the staff at the home try and deter Glen from hitting himself in his eye during this recovery period and indeed in the future. I am a bit nervous about how Glen will be at home next time he visits as I will be worrying about him hitting his eye here like last time and I can't stop him as if I do he just hits me instead so it's a difficult one.

Jeanne have you any idea what the eye specialists opinion was, on why Glens retina became detatched? Did he think it was because of the eye slapping? Or did Glen have a weak eye ?

We were told that it was very hard to detach your own retina.

Hi Lisa, yes apparently Glen did have a weak eye and his continuous slapping of his eye over the years hasn't helped the situation. Like you said it is very difficult to detach a retina.

A weak eye was apparently what my son had too. You may find that Glens behaviour improves now that the eye is no longer aggravating him. My sons behaviour did .

Hi Jeanne,

I am sorry Glen has had such a awful time recently both at home with your and at the care home and the experience with the police. What occurs to me is that the detached retina happened prior to the home visit and subsequent problems at the care home that required the police attendance. The detatched retina could well have caused sensory distress to him and been the cause of the distress and meltdown rather than the meltdowns and subsequent hiting himself causing the detatched retina. So difficult to know what's cause and what is effect but wishing him a speedy recovery from his surgery.

Hi dektra many thanks for your comments you could be right about the sensory distress to him, it's very difficult to know where Glen is concerned due to him not able to tell you what he's feeling.

You made an interesting point there, I hope Glen was trying to communicate his eye problem to his mum. I have hit myself in a part of my body that is pulsating because it was annoying me. I have attempted to deflect pain from 1 place to another (hidden physical along with emotional pain).

Hi Mel, Glen's recovery is going well so far thanks. He hasn't hit himself since the operation which is good, I just hope it stays that way. The staff at the care home are keeping a very close eye on him and aim to deter him if he attempts to self harm. Glen's been on medication as his eye is obviously quite sore. Glen has to go back to the hospital for a check up in due course.

Hi Kirsty yes I have found out some more about the maybo technique being used at the care home. The staff are being trained with skills and knowledge to restrict and control the movement and freedom of a young person (such as Glen) when they are extremely aggressive in order to protect themselves, the young person and others from injury or assault. Apparently the primary goal is to reduce the need for physical intervention. They only use maybo as a last resort.

Hi Lisa and Trekster yes I'm really pleased with the way Glen's recovery is going. He seems much more settled since the surgery. Thank you so much Trekster for your kind words. I think this is a fantastic and by far the best forum I know of and am more than happy to give my support as best as I can. :-)
