LizK Report post Posted January 3, 2006 My four year old has a disordered speech development with an expressive and receptive speech delay of about 12mths. Someone on here recommended the More Than Words book a while ago and I got a copy just before Christmas. Fab book ! Reading sections of it was like a real eyeopener, felt like someone was actually writing about my son, I could to relate to so many of the descriptions . I understand that Hanen from which it is derived is Canadian but I'm sure I've heard of More Than Words courses held in the UK. My sons speech dealy is the biggest thing that is holding him back currently but the More Than Words approach is the first thing I've come across which I've felt would really help this and I'd love to go on a course. I asked our SALT about this but she's not aware of any such courses. She did say that Early Bird which we are starting this month is partly based on the Hanen method so maybe that's as good as it gets. Just wondering really if anyone here had gone on a More Than Words course and whterht hey found it helpful? Liz x

oracle Report post Posted January 3, 2006 Glad you liked it Liz it is a brilliant book Early Bird does have a great deal of Hanen but I do not think that it covers the programme the way the course that I attended did. However if you have the book then you have the tools of the trade in your own hands, and Early Bird can only assist the book. Carole

Liz x Hanen hold a very tight grip on its products and for your local SLT dept to run this course they would have had to send their therapists on a specialist course and then the individual therapist has to pay to maintain their license to run a Hanen course. Hanen will hold a list of all the licensed SLTs in your area.

Lynden Report post Posted January 3, 2006 Hiya Liz We have the book and its fantastic. I'd love to go on a course too but not sure if there is anything here. I'd love to know how you get on with the Early Bird course as Chris and I are supposed to do it towards the end of this year. Lynne xx
Steve_colour-se7en Report post Posted January 3, 2006 (edited) Hello LLaverty, We as parents have not long since finished the Earlybird plus course it has been worthy learning tool, my wife gained the most benifit , being on the spectrum myself(AS) the whole Autistic Spectrum Disorder subject is actually one of my obsessions as is computing (or as I prefer to call them my special interests, even if they do get intense), although I did learn don't think I didn't. However a lot of what its about i knew of, through being on the spectrum, and having the 'special interest'. My wife has said it has helped her see things differently the iceberg approach, and has helped us greatly in proving ways to create develop coping strategies. Being Asperger, I don't see sometimes the difficulties of why we sometimes struggle (cross purposes)- as i may think of something and because, just because I have thought it, I will assume that she will know exactly what i'm talking about. In retrospect then, because I have known things in quite some depth about ASD's I would assume her to know the very same information. so with this in mind it has even helped here very much, although both my son and myself have our moments. for anyone making enquiries regarding obtaining a place on Earlybird course, I have placed the following: here is a list of EarlyBird Plus licensed teams and a list of the areas they cover.on this link hope it's of help. http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=468&a=5604 Steve.. pumpkinpie Report post Posted January 7, 2006 I went on a hanen course years ago and found it helpful in getting into the right mental frame for helping a child with disabilities. But what I found was that every thing was blamed by sppech and language as a developmental delay and they would not listen when I kept saying this was useful but more help was needed. Sometimes I think therapists use thse programmes as a way of avoiding working properly with our kids to help them. Lack of funds I suppose/
