Hi onlycrazygal and welcome to the forum.

This is a topic that seems to worry quite a few of us and appears fairly regularly on the boards in various forms.

A has always complained about seeing and hearing things that we don't notice. It used to worry me, thought he might have a psychotic disorder, but now I realise it's more to do with his sensory integration difficulties.

This topic here was on the visual aspects and might be worth reading.

What sort of things does your son see or hear?

Perhaps its a delay in what hes heard in the past kindo of thing

Ie its taking him a while to process it and therefore appears to hear whats been said or seen in the past at another time.

Welcome to the forum by the way from one Paula to another one.

I was just thinking of posting about this myself.

My son Luke is 11 and has ASD/AS/Dyspraxia and severe anxiety with self harming because of school distress. (as usual school claim not to see it)

He is on Risperidone for the self harming and anxiety but is more and more talking about seeing and hearing things, they are usually frihgtening things and what they say is usually about him dying or telling him to kill himself etc.

He has just been refered back to mental health (they closed his case before as they said he was too young to be a serious suicide risk at that time, 2 years ago)

this time he has been refered by the specalist paediatrician to a clinical psychologist.

We have been refused statutory assessment and are going to tribunal this Thursday (sooooo worried)

PSA,

Did anyone consider that the medication your son is taking could be causing his problems? Risperidone is an anti-psychotic and although it is sometimes used to prevent delusions, it has been known to cause them where none previoulsy existed, just a thought, because the sort of things your son seems to be hearing are different from the sensory disturbances that my son experiences. If I try hard enough I can usually trace the sounds or conversations that he hears.

He was having some before he went on the meds (last August) and I mentioned them to the paediatrician last month (she was the one who put him on it) she has refered him to the clinical psychologist as she says he is on a low dose and doesn't think its them making the problem worse.

Luke talks about it like its totally normal to him so its been happening for a long time I think.

We have had a discussion on the boards before about the psychic ability of children on the spectrum. A talks about seeing presences and always has. When we visit old buildings, he's particularly sensitive to this and he sometimes refers to the presences as evil, you can see that he's visibly disturbed by what is happening. I know this is a bit controversial but it is one possible interpretation. I know carole has made some interesting posts on this, I'll see if I can find some. I think when you've explored all the probable causes you need to be open to the improbable ones, but how you make things better for him, I don't know.

Hi Paula -

Yes, it's fairly common...

some kids have 'heightened sensitivity' to visual stimuli (so may be completely drawn in/fascinated by things like dust motes or variations in light and shade that we 'filter out'), in a similar way that other children experience heightened sensitivity to sound, touch, taste or smell. Others (my son included) experience hallucinations (and this is not 'bad dreams' - it's for real: wide awake, and scary as hell the first few times it happens!), and i have heard of others who can 'see' Kirlean fields (some people like to refer to these as 'auras' and give them all sorts of spiritual/supernatural connotations, but what they are effectively seeing is the bodies electrical field)...

On the 'dust motes/lights' thing: Donna Williams gives a fairly good description of her 'wisps' in Nobody Nowhere.

Hope that's helpful

BD :D

Hi an welcome >:D<<'>

Couldn't say if it was related to AS or not really.

When my ds was 3 he wouldn't go in my mums hallway because he said he could see a man there, this went on for about 6 mths. Now here's the spooky bit, when my daughter was 2 1/2 she went through exactely the same thing, same place.

Back a couple of mths ago we had real trouble with ds he would wake in the night screaming that there was a monster in the room. No matter what we said to convince him there were no such things he was adamant, even refused to go to bed. He could describe this 'monster' down to a t, big eyes, nose ect. Anyway i told him that was no monster it was mummy coming in to tuck him back in bed and kiss him good night (i have a big nose :crying: ) This seem to do the trick, and hey presto no more sleepless nights about monsters!

thanks for your replies guys , its given me an idea of whats going on for him,

he has always had an intense fear of going upstairs.......so myself and his older brother take turns escorting him to the toilet. a couple of years ago i saw a doctor over his behaviour and his many fears and the doctor said, that if i continued to escort him upstairs he would do this until i physically drop (being disabled) so on the docs advice i stopped going with him there and then.

my son then adapted his own way of dealing with it, he would leg it upstairs at hyperspeed wee at hyperspeed and leg it down again, but this became troublesome as we had noticed he wasnt weeing in the loo it was all over the floor , everywhere, i started to have a moan at him for this as the floor was constantly wet, and the toilet room very smelly. he must of got fed up with us constantly having a go at him as he became that desperate he started to wee on the livingroom carpet when no-one was about. he would swear it wasnt him but we knew it was.......it got to the point were we had to rip the carpet up, so i lay some laminate flooring down.

we chatted about it and he told me everytime he went to the loo he felt there was someone behind him, so as he was weeing he was constantly looking over his shoulder panicing sometimes seeing outlines of a person or shadows that would quickly disappear.......since then we have gone back to the old method of going up with him. he tells me he sees our cats around the house when they are outside. also said he saw a man in our garden when there was no-one about. just recently he said he has an imaginary friend one that no-one can see , i just acknoledged this an said very little but obviously its a worry ......

thanks again guys, your comments were really helpful..... >:D<<'>

hugs,

paula x
