Ds#2 (5) excluded yet again

Recommended Posts

I've posted before about ds#2 who's just turned 5 and just started Reception. He's been sent home so many times since starting I've lost count and the last 3 times have been formal fixed term exclusions. He's only on a part time timetable to begin with and I've just added up that in the last month he's had 7 days (adding the half days together) of education out of a possible total of 20.

He's just been diagnosed with PDA with a likely AS diagnosis following (although I have ds#1 with AS and with ds#2 the PDA is the predominant issue I think).

School can't cope and really think he needs a speciallised placement but the problem is that there isn't anything suitable in our area for a PDA child. There are children in a local special school with PDA but these children have learning difficulties, some severe, and ds#2 is very bright so it's possibly not the right place.

I'm incredibly fed up now. He has a support worker who's been off sick for the last 3 weeks with no cover and there's no funding for any supply TAs.

We've started the statement process but it's still early days, we're still not sure as to whether they'll assess yet and even if they do it's going to be a long time with ds#2 barely in school.

Just seems that there's nothing anyone can do (I've looked at IPSEA but the exclusions are all perfectly correct and tbh I don't blame the school for excluding him, he's a very real Health and Safety risk).

If they acknowledge he has SEN and that he needs support - it seems wrong that they are excluding him when they are not providing that support. He may not have got in that situation if he had had the support. If he is a H&S risk - they should be making sure he has support by using a TA from elsewhere in the school.

WOW, Im blown away at your post to be honest, if it really is a health and safety issue and the school can no longer meet your sons needs then surely the LEA need to be doing urgent assessments and placing your son in an apropriate school or specialist provision.

I really do recomend further proffessional advice and Id look into getting a solisitor, I understand you are excepting the exclusions as his behaviour is warrenting them, but what if yours sons behaviour was a result of lack of provisions, support and specialist teachers.

If he is excluded he isnt exactly included he is, all this rave about inclusion really annoys me when its simple some children need specialist placements.

Contact a family, ACE, Network 81, Nas Educational helpline, and even ipsea as I would want to investigate the exclusions, his behaviour is the result but what was the cause, I urge you to write a strong letter to your Special Educational Needs authority in your area and complain that your sons needs are not been met.

Were is this early years intervention, early screening this has to surely warrent this in your sons case.

Hi jlp

>:D<<'>

I am so sorry you are going through this. My DS is in Year 2 and was only doing an hour a day from May - July this year as he was fixed term excluded 3 times in one week and they couldn't get anymore TA support. He needs constant 1:1 and is also a health and safety risk. My DS was part time too until he was 5. He is only doing until 1pm now. We have just been turned down for Stat Assessment by our infurating LA, I am going to tribunal.

One thing the Head has managed to secure is emergency funding from the LA from the 'Access and Exclusion' section. We have got 70hours up until Xmas to be spent only on providing 1:1 in the afternoons. The school are advertising now for a TA we are going to build him up gradually. We have got this funding because DS is at high risk of exclusion unless he has 1:1. I am hoping this will strengthen my case. We are waiting to see if the LA will reconsider putting his case back before the panel, if not my SENDIST hearing is March 09, and that is just to get the LA to assess - they still can refuse to statement. How I don't know.

If I can be of anymore help you can always send me a PM and I can give you my email.

Although my son does not have PDA - I thought he did at one point - I am right there with you on the exclusion, part time, lack of support, stressful AGHHHHHHHH time!!! So just let me know if you want a rant etc...

Clare
