  1. My stepson, possibly AS, has always had a obsession with cars and traffic etc, Now at 21 he is a bus driver. Works for him.
  2. It is argued over and over that the value of GCSEs as a level of academic achievement is decreasing because the are to easy. I would argue that for some people on this site they are something to avoid because their child is unlikely to achieve a level of any value and would prefer their child to put their efforts into acquiring life skills instead. I can see myself in this same situation at some time in the future, but would be unlikely to go down the road of home educating. By the way the argument about GCSEs only comes into play for children in Years 10 and 11, so what is the argument for home educating younger children? Over to you.
  3. Yes I know all that but at the end of the day all these courses no mater how accessed have some sort of assessment at the end that measures the person level of achievement. I would totally agree about the GCSEs and if I thought that a child of mine would not benefit from taking them I would have no hesitation about bypassing them. You dont have to home educate to do this. As a parent of children who have done GCSEs I know that they don't give the child any Idea about what to expect when they move into further education. It come as a bit of a shock what real studying is all about.

Back to my original post. He has now decided that he does like his room and can I paint the curtains the same colour as the walls. So all's well that .....
  5. But if you didn't have GCSE's you would still need some way of measuring the level of ability that children have. Without that children how want to go on to college for example would have to sit an entrance exam, how would the college know what their abilities were and what course would suit them.
  6. The law requires you to provide an education equivalent in standard to the minimum that they would have reserve if at school. Which means you don't have to work to a very high standard. Just a few basics. And as you will be working with only one or maybe two children you only need spend a few hours a day doing formal teaching.

    1st meeting

Hi All We moved between areas just after our son diagnosis. Where we live before things were very different from where we live now. What happened there was school make referral to multi disciplinary unit (known by builds name). Can be made by others but will be referred back to school. They look at it and ask various people to see child and report back, This goes on for ever(about a year) then child gets to see top dog (lasts over 3 hours) who makes diagnosis on the spot, Well you get it in a letter and a 12 page report a few weeks later. (This is when we moved) Then(3 months later) they call a meeting of all concerned to see where you go from there. At that point is the first time that a pediatrician is involved. So when his new school asked us about his pediatrician, how do I know, haven't seen one. And all the other thing that we are only just finding out exist. Also at the time we thought that he was doing alright at school, seems from what new school say he is not doing that well. They have a much higher expectation, me thinks. Well what I was going to say is that what you can expect and how things work are very different from one part of the country to another. There was never any suggestion of getting a statement before but new school thinks it is on. Seeing Educational Psychologist in a few weeks so will find out more.
  8. Thanks. What I thought was meant gave a completely different question. I don't see what difference the existence of GCSEs have to do with home education. If you are serious about your child's education then you would put them in for whatever system existed for jugging their level of achievement. How else could they move on to the next level ,College, University, etc. You can do GCSE from home but it is not easy. I don't think I could home educate I don't have the patience. Home work is enough for me. So I can't answer the question as to me it is the wrong question.
  9. Please someone tell me what does "HE" stand for.
  10. Yes. Our son can help himself to as much fruit as he wants, but biscuits and sweets he asks first. The answer would seldom be no other than if we thought he had to many sweets or if it was coming up to meal time. Then if we say no we will give him an explanation which normally he accepts.( Not always with a smile on his face.) The sweets and biscuits are where he could help himself if he wanted to.
  11. Not knowing the context, I don't know the answer. Surely stealing is a deliberate act of taking some thing which you are not entitled to, IE A tin of biscuits from Tescos without paying. If a child take a biscuit from to cupboard at home without asking first is that sealing?. I suppose you could say it was ,but as I said it depends on the context.
  12. I may be a bit slow but what is "HE"?

Seen the program on telly. Complete refurbished room, lots of smiles and "Its wonderful". What did I get "Don't like it ". But you chose the colours etc etc. After lots of sulks settled for "Next time I decorate your room I'll do it just how you like." Didn'T tell him it is likely to be 10years before I get round to it again.
