  1. Hello everyone, Thousands of families could be helped by a ground-breaking trial starting in Norfolk today measuring the effect of fish-oil supplements on youngsters with autism, dyslexia and Asperger Syndrome. A group of 38 boys aged 10 to 16 at Eaton Hall Special School in Norwich will begin taking the eye q omega 3 fish oil supplements daily for the next six months. The official trial - the first in the country involving children with special needs - could have far-reaching implications in the treatment of the conditions for thousands of youngsters and their families. Drugs such as Ritalin, prescribed to those with attention deficit disorder and ADHD, often have side-effects such as loss of appetite and insomnia. The trial will look at whether omega fish oils can reduce those symptoms and enable the youngsters to return to mainstream education. 9. Hello MarknotGeorge, Well done, it's not easy Diagnosis as an adult is I feel, is very personal indeed as such there is only yourself who can make the decision to seek a formal diagnosis. Some people, it would seem cannot and will not move forward without such, there is also the person will not require or see the need to follow this path.If you do decide to follow the route of a formal DX ist is not always easy. First step would be to seek advice from your GP, however not all GP's are familiar with ASD's below a link on Important facts about autism and Asperger syndrome for GPs http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=128&a=2225 Here is another link Diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorders - a brief guide for health professionals http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=118&a=2224 Help with a diagnosis and ways to bring up the subject with your doctor, remember this please that, Asperger syndrome isn't widely heard of among GPs. The typical route for getting diagnosed is to visit your GP and ask for a referral to a psychiatrist or clinical psychologist http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=225&a=3341 Steve.. 10. Researchers may soon have a whole new way to diagnose and treat children with autism. Autism is a genetic condition which alters communication and behavior. Dr. Cindy Molloy heads up a team of researchers conducting a breakthrough study trying to find out how genetics and the immune system play a role in autism. Molloy has more than professional interest in the disease. Her daughter, Shannon, was diagnosed with autism at the age of three-years-old. 11. Ulster parents campaigning for better services for children living with autism say the lack of Government-funded support in the Province mirrors the situation in Australia and parts of America. Campaigners have learned that Australia is apparently experiencing a surge in autism spectrum disorders, where a ten-fold rise in diagnoses have been made in the past decade. http://www.newsletter.co.uk/story/25367 Steve.. 12. Animal scientist Temple Grandin often drops to her hands and knees to crawl through chutes in meat processing plants, striving to see the world the way pigs do -- and fix what's spooking them. Sometimes it's the reflection on a puddle of water. Sometimes it's a change in floor surface, or a sudden draft of air. Sometimes it's a tiny piece of flapping plastic that no human would notice. Humans tend to "live surrounded by our ideas of things" rather than noticing what's actually there, Grandin says. Animals, on the other hand, tend to notice every detail of their environment. Without language to process the world, animals navigate their lives by "thinking in pictures." http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/sfl-gra...ports-headlines Steve.. 14. The follwing news story is worth reading. Autism; A window on the world. Our daughter, Nikki, is the second of three children. Born in 1995, Nikki is a strikingly beautiful little girl with a very charismatic personality. We call her the "air that we breathe" as a family. Nikki is our 10-year-old daughter. We learned about seven years ago she is autistic. When Nikki was born, I immediately noticed something very different about her. Although difficult to explain, mostly it was her lack of eye contact and evasiveness toward me ? her father ? and anyone else other than her mother. My wife, Eileen, to this day will swear that she thought it was simply motherly bonding with a little girl who felt most secure in her mother's arms. The strange behavior became more apparent as Nikki grew older; however, she hit all the normal milestones of a 2-year-old child. Just after Nikki turned 2, and driven by emotional frustration, I took another day off work and accompanied my wife to yet another doctor's appointment with another so-called specialist. This was after several doctor's visits, none of which gave us a conclusive answer as to Nikki's problems, and some that led us to dead ends. http://www.app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?A.../601080344/1006 Steve.. 21. Hello everyone, Sensory overload as I see it; takes the form of a severe kind of tantrum, which itself brings about a complete colapse of coping abilities. Some Autistic people tend to shut down when they reach this stage. For me, if too much information is happening audio, visually I get to a stage where I cannot take in any more information because of this I may start to miss certain bits of information and as such, get extremely stressed out as a direct result. I can only describe it as my brain appears not to register all that my senses are seeing and feeling etc.. so this may mean too much information all at once, the result of which is actually incomplete due to the senses missing snippets of information - therefore I feel things don't make sense and so its this feeling, for me that seems to set off the maxing out session/ sensory overload. This is where I cannot seem to think, almost as if my mind has gone completely blank. As this stage is reached I need to retreat to a quieter zone and to included the Mathmos type coloured lighting (pebble variety) helps to create a calming atmosphere and basically wait for the feeling to subside, this is how sensory overload seems to affect me. There are some Autistics that, as they reach this stage may kick and scream, or even self harm as a direct result of reaching sensory overload. It would seem, some professionals do feel that some of the so called typical autistic behaviours may even be a direct result of sensory intergration difficulties. Steve.. 22. Hello everyone, I find certain situations more stressfull than others, fleeting eyeglances where possible, however more i am more comfortable with looking at the area of the bridge of the nose, around this area enables me to avoid direct eye cotact while appearing to others to appear to having done so due to the initial fleeting glance. I suppose this gives most people the impression you are then willing to reciprocate the conversation and therefore appear comply with what society sees as the norm. Eye contact once a conversation starts I cannot seem to make too much of if any due to the fact I cannot seem to talk and listen at the same time (multi tasking) can only do this on the computer and then not too much of that or so I am told, perhaps this is the extreme male brain showing. I have always avoided standing directly in front of someone during conversation, I am always very much aware that I feel threatend by a stance full on as such I tend to turn and always wherever possible carry the conversation on while attempting to stand more to the side of the person thus avoiding full eye contact, takes some pratice but after years of it you do get better at it, another learned coping strategy if feel. Sometimes I feel forced eye contact to be directly part or a contributing factor to a sensory overload. Steve.. I think the boy means well but he is distinctly inclined to be inattentive...... 23. Hello everyone, The test will not work, it is not a proper test, it is as stated just in fun? Canopus, it would seem to be the case, there are indeed certain countries that may look unfavourably on certain aspects of the site . 24. Hello everyone, Another news release this is worth a read. Published: Wednesday, January 4, 2006 11:34 AM CST New research is out regarding autism treatment. Wisconsin Early Autism Project (WEAP), a Wisconsin-based treatment program for young children with autism, has published a study showing that 48 percent of children treated can achieve average functioning by age 7. The research, conducted as a replication of work done at UCLA in the 1970s, found that a service model utilizing in-home intensive behavioral therapy with autistic preschoolers is so effective that 90 percent of the children who participated learned to use speech as their first form of communication. Half of the participants in the study reached average IQs after three to four years of treatment and were able to enter first grade and follow the regular classroom curriculum.
