  1. Kathryn I get this from parents of my n.t. daughter who is 9.They all brag about what reading level they are on what dancing grade they are on etc etc.I don't join in.It makes me feel rather uncomfortable.I've seen the other side of the coin with my daughter who was so severely ill with autistic encephalitus she couldnt do a thing.I feel it's kind of tempting fate. These same parents hover round the classroom door every day to hear our well little johnny is doing. They asked yesterday and the day before that and the day before that.I often genuinally need to see the teacher as my daughter struggles and I cant get near nor by. <'> <'> <'> to you Kathryn.I must admit i feel your daughter has come on along way.
  2. IAMNOTPRINCEHAMLET I do that too rehearse conversations in my head I am going to have with people that often don't happen I feel quite spooked now I think talking to yourself both out loud and in your head is quite common for aspies.Could be wrong on this but I am sure i have read it somewhere and it has gone into my memory bank I also visualise words in my head which is why at school my spelling was very good. I also re-enact situations in my head like a film.i've never realised I do thease things really untili stopped and thought about it.
  3. Thanks nellie.Sorry to ask another question. What do you mean hasn't validated yet?Because I see they are still posting????Confused
  4. Apologies.I personally will endevour to do that.
  5. Could someone tell me what it means when it says that a person is a member of the validating group? And why are theit names in a different colour? Thanks sorry to be so silly
  6. Normal is what ever anyone wishes to pecieve it to be.there is no one who is entirely normal. It is probably a word that should be banned from the english dictionary. As you are new to the forum tania it might be an idea to post on the introductions forum saying how your life is affected by a.s.
  7. I too would agree with mother eve, might be a good idea to see your g.p and voice your concerns to him. Welcome to the forum.Stick around it's full of knowledge and experience
  8. Hidden gem i take on board what you say i do have problems with communication but there is nothing wrong with my memory. You need to take on board that you have problems with your short term memory and may have forgoten exactly what was said.It is possible to have a.s. and lead a normal life as i do and many others do. Jb1964 Encourage your daughter in her talents. She sounds a great person with much to offer.I too used to get my essays and that read out at school.I believe the reason many aspies can write so well is perhaps because we are usually poor at verbal communication and it is kind of compensating us.Just my thoughts. Best Wishes
  9. Strange girl You would be surprised at how normal it is for aspies to have the super memory you describe. Many can remember colours of carpets and curtains from when they were very young just as you can. I had to remember for a police officer a couple of years ago where a teachers desk was in relation to the door. This was from when i was just ten years old.I remembered it perfectly for her, also where the blackboard was where the windows were, where the outside door was and where other children sat in the class. Twenty five years had passed!!! She couldn't believe what she was hearing. It all helped the case she was investigating though. Her face was a picture So yes definately an aspie thing to be able to remeber such detail from so young. Aspies love detail.I ask so many questions in a row so I get all the details that my poor daughter and hubby run off with their hands over their ears I don't mean to though I don't realise until after .
  10. Just to add people with a.s are often extremely good in the arts field at writing or drawing, sometimes amazingly talented or they are extremely good on the p.c. many are brilliant computer programmers. It is a spectrum disorder and the ones that are on the higher functioning end of the scale are obviously the hardest to diagnose.
  11. LIz c I am well aware it is total rubbish to say such a thing e.g.' if x had a.s. he would be in resedential care and not be able to lead a normal life and have a job etc' This is not something that was taken out of context that was exactly what was said to me by both hidden gem and hidden gem's partner. And it was told to them by two different so called professionals. The trouble is that people who do nor know about A.S. believe this nonsence. I basically told both of them it is a load of rubbish. What concerns me more is the fact that these people may just be diagnosing our children Like you rightly say there are loads of famous and extremely clever people with a.s. A.s. is not the end of the world. It doesn't mean that we are all shut in a home and passed off as no importance. I have an extremely good memory and am well able to remember what was said to me. At the time I kind of got the impression that both of them actually believed this rubbish but then if you don't know too much about a.s. i guess you might do.At the time I did my best without actually being rude to correct them but at the end of the day people need to be much more educated about a.s. and it is comments like this that people then believe that prove it.
  12. I had an imagiary friend when i was a child.i also engaged in imaginary play in a normal manner.Where i fall down is the ability to imagine what others might be feeling. I am an adult with suspected a.s. Some people with a.s. can and do engage in imaginative play. hope this helps.
  13. jb1964 I believe that girls tend to present differently than boys withASD and therefore seem to get diagnosed later, not always of course but there have been several cases I have both read and heard of just like yours. I went all the way through school without anyone picking anything up.i always towed the line at school was painfully shy quiet and well behaved.Girls seem very good at masking their A.S. Boys that i know with A.S. do seem to come across straight away as odd, different etc. I have to say though my eye contact is absolutely fine so this was a very obvious pointer that was not there. However at home \i was not the quiet shy well behaved child that i presented to school. I sicerely hope that you get offered support from somewhere. Best wishes Welcome to the forum. Its only now as an adult I have began to realise from knowing other family members that I have in fact have A.S.
  14. Just to add a bit of useless info.i can remember sitting in my pram as a baby and where pieces of furniture were ina house i lived in when i was three years old.My hubbie says it's not normal and scary. That's the aspie super memory for you.
  15. IAMNOTPRINCEHAMLET I can relate to much of what you said.My husband calls me the walking memory bank.I too can remember everything people have said but I do tend to edit out the good bits at times and focus on the bad. Out of interest do you have any problems with your short term memory as i know a lot of aspies do. I don't my short term memory is as good as my long term memory but i think that is not necessarily the norm. At school I was good at any subject that involved remembering large chunks of texts and quotes etc e.g. english lit, religious education, history etc. I think there are many aspies that wood make good lawyers.they certainly will argue until they are blue in the face. They also love rules and havea very vivd sense of what is right and wrong I agree with you there.I do feel though that many people with a.s. struggle to know what is right and what is wrong. Best wishes.By the way i try to deal with my anger in a constructive way but sometimes it's hard isn't!t?Take care
  16. IAmNOTPRINCEHAMLET Life must be rather difficult for you, three aspies in one house. There is only one in our house and dh would say that's enough I think people with a.s can find it difficult to control emotions e.g. anger happiness sadness etc. This is why you tend to get these bursts of anger that they are seemingly unable to control over the smallest of things. They can also be extremely emotional o r completely unemotional and not always at the right times or when society would expect them to be. I too have learnt to control my temper to a certain extent and to try to keep calm, after all i guess i cant throw myself on the floor and scream at 37 You do get the very few people with a.s who are very passive but it is more likely they are prone to outbursts of completely irrational anger. I think it is all part of having problems with emotions.Hope this helps Best wishes
  17. There is an interesting piece on this in this weeks woman if anyone wants to get a copy.
  18. Bullet No worries We are all often thinking of a million different things at once whilst posting on here.i certainly am
  19. Karin Thanks for pointing out the other side of the coin so well. <'> <'> <'> For you Hope you get some kind of help in the very near future.Remeber you as a parent know your children best and if you say there is something wrong then in all probability it is likely there is. I've been there I've been called neurotic, making thing up etc until finally they all admitted defeat as they watched her under a bed in a dr's waiting room rocking on the floor.Guess what within a day she was in gt ormond street and eventually diagnosed with autistic encephalitus caused by the mmr vaccination but likely to have happened to her due to genetics. Best wishes i really feel for you. Let's hope hidden gem is never on the other side of the coin trying to get his kids diagnosed.
  20. Gordie Thanks for putting it on the calender and linking it back.i was hoping you would I am not that clever and i thought aspies were supposed to be good with computers. They missed me out Yep its definately 9pm with a second part to follow not sure when that one is though
  21. Hi All i don't know if anyone would like to watch this.It is a two part fly on the wall documentry following three families adopting three babies from different countries. One of them Dylan is from romania and is autistic.Apparently four years after the event Dylan's mum decides she wants him back. I'll be watching .I think it will be a bit of a tear jerker though
  22. Strange Girl Me too.It is an excellent forum Big brother is one of my favourite programes.Yes i know sad
  23. Bullet I think i unintentionally confused you I am lucky in that i personally do not have any children on the spectrum. My two are N.T. although my daughter suffered from autistic encephalitus for six months. This was something that someone had said to someone else not me.Sorry for the confusion. I should have been clearer explaining.Having A.S. myself communication is not my strong point.I also find it a job sometimes to understand what people are saying to me I guess life would be dull if i was normal
  24. Paula I have heard of a professional saying to someone 'oh no x cant have aspergers, you would know he would be in resedential care and wouldn't be able to lead a normal life and have a job etc etc' That is from a professional. There is not a lot of hope really. I have a.s. I am lucky in that ihave a job and bring up two children. That does not mean i do not have it.
