SEMANTIC PRAGMATIC DISORDER

Recommended Posts

After 10 years of telling people there is something wrong with my eldest son I saw a GP friday who had worked with autistic people for three years. She was seeing my youngest son as the school had referred him to an inclusion officer and a speech and language therapist three days after he started pre shool. I was upset as he is not as bad as my 14 yr old and nobody took him seriously in the end I have home educated him for nearly 4 years. So I made an appointment to see her re my youngest son I started crying because i have been so exhausted over the years trying to cope and she called my eldest son in and chatted to him. She said I was not going mad that they have a problem and has referred them both to a specialist saying she thinks they and my HUSBAND has this disorder! I new my husband was odd and did not realise it could be the same thing. I know nothing about this disorder does anyone else? Sorry to ramble on thanks for reading.

I'm very sorry to hear of all the stress you have been through, I went through something similar where I didn't know what was wrong withmy son, he had speech and language problems and was dx with semantic pragmatic disorder before being dx with asperger syndrome, they are all linked there is some information on national autistic society website,it is classed as an asd now and the symproms are similar. Do a search for info on the NAS site also aphasic have info when i find the sites I'll post them

My simplistic understanding of SPLD is that is it an autistic pattern of speech and language development. I think some people think it is a disorder in its own right ie the person does not have the other aspects of the triad, others think it is a way of simply describing autistic speech and if you look hard enough most with spld type speech will have the other traits of autism. I remember someone telling me that my son years ago might have been given that label before the concept of the autistic spectrum was widely known about as his speech is probably his most autistic feature

yes, I have heard of this also, it was one possibility I was looking at when my son was 7, dx at 18 privately with AS, prior to this just labeled bad behaviour.

hi,

my son was dx asd last year and then his twin sister was noticed to be having difficulties at nursery, i have been told by jasmines consultant that she is most likely spd as he doesnt think she is on the spectrum, the nursery and their SALT are arguing that she has severe spd and also asd. so i have been looking into what SPD is and it does describe jas quite well, but i feel she is def on the spectrum so im waiting to see what happens in the next year or so

Thank you all so much. After 12 .5 years of saying that my son is not slow or stupid or lazy or rude or all the other things teachers have labelled him over the years it is a bit of a relief that someone took me seriously. I am grateful because he is 15 in july and although he is doing well with his computer course and maths course he is very bad at english. I was getting worried because he is ok with these tutors now they know how to teach him and how he will sound when talking to them but i was concerned about him looking for a job when he was 16 after all I cannot go to an interview and explain the way he is. I have lived with this problem for nearly twenty years my husband was told years before I met him that he exhibted traits which could be Asperger syndrome but as he was an adult nothing was done as he was coping with life. He only told me that this week ! He is very clever but rude and quite detached which makes it hard sometimes but i thought when i met him it was because he had been abused and i could help him. Well I have but he is still odd and now it appears both my sons have the same or similar problems. I am not feeling quite so bad now if they are diagnosed officially at least I can tell people why they behave this way. Thank you all for your replies x

Starting this week I'll now be supporting a lad with Semantic Pragmatic Disorder on a twice a fortnightly basis. He is in Year 7 and I'll be in one of his English lessons and one of his Geography lessons. I was also trying to get into another of his lessons but got told by the teacher that he didn't think he would benefit from support. Nor has this lad ever actually had any support since arriving at the school. The only reason I'm going to be supporting him is that the main English teacher I work with told me I should try and get to one of her lessons to observe him. Year 11s have just gone on study leave so I had some free slots and asked if she'd like some support in the 1 lesson I could manage. I do get sick of some teachers attitudes at times. Another teacher I support won't even let me in her English lessons (again Year 7 though a different group). Students keep asking why I can't support them in the lesson. Instead she uses me to supervise them one at a time (same 3 from the class week in week out too) on 'word shark'. It is not really a productive use of my time. May talk to the SENCO and see if he would be okay with me changing to this lads lessons as at least then I can be more useful. Would double the number of lessons he has support for. He is on school action plus incase anyone is interested because a psycologist was involved in the past. There isn't any present support from any agencies. English teacher certainly seems to think he should have more support.

My son has quite severe SPLD. It has an amazing crossover with ASD and apparently it is quite hard to distinguish between the two. My son has had very good speech therapy and he has progressed very well. They best descibed it to me by saying, when he hears a word or name he takes it in to his brain and files it. The problem is that he files it in the wrong section, so when he then needs to access that word again he can't easily find it and requires prompts to remind him where it is filed. If he cant find the word then he often uses chunks from a video to fill it! I hope that it makes sense! If you wish to contact me I can probably get you some more info. Just remember it can be helped a good speech therapist is the key!
