Nappies on the NHS

Recommended Posts

Hi i have heard people talking about getting nappies on the nhs, and was wondering what age you can get them from and how you go about doing it.

Do you have to do it through your HV as i dont get on well with her as she has always been trying to tell me im a overprotective mom and am worrying about nothing, when i expressed my concerns to her about dd having ASD, so if there is another way to do it can someone let me know as i dont really want to do it through her

In my area, I believe the age is 4. I asked my paed about it a couple of months ago, because I'd heard it mentioned elsewhere. As my son is only just over 3 and only has one nappy at night-time, I didn't pursue it any further , so I'm not sure who actually provides them.

Hello, in our area a child qualifies for free nappies at the age of 3yrs. We got ours via the Continence Dept at the hospital, although they will give only 4 'units' per 24hr period...I did write to our paed. about this because 4 'units' per 24hr period is insufficient, although it didn't change anything. We had the continence nurse come out to measure up ds and we now have a delivery of nappies every 8wks or so. I believe ds's O.T. provided us with the continence nurse's phone number and details. Good luck.

I think the age is four. We recently had to update our supply for DS2 (who wets once a night) because he's a bit bigger now, at eight!

I went through the HV, although we don't actually have one any more now the kids are at school, but it wasn;t the one I used to have any way. She was very helpful and came to our house to show me the different sizes; she'd obvioulsy read our notes too, and seen that DS3 has a question mark about ADHD. she said that as he's now five and still wetting he could probably get the service too, although when I clarified that he hasn;t actually got a dx she thought not.

I guess it depends who you talk to. As suggested, try the GP or a different HV if yours is not sympathetic. I can't help feeling sort of guilty about DS2 getting free nappies, but this nice HV said *blushes* that she could see I was dealing with a great deal and thought I was doing a wonderful job and that if she could help in any way she was only happy to. I'd obviously found the right person!

So good luck, sarahponari, and I hope you find the right person, too. there are a few out there!! >:D<<'> >:D<<'>

T has pull ups at night, I do buy them myself now. I used to get them through the NHS via the Health visitor when he was in them in the day.

The age was 3 where we were in Scotland and three where we are in London. We get up to 6 nappies a day though and our HV just asked for the highest - a) because Logan is a heavy wetter and B) coz we need to put nappies into school also.

We got them via the specialist Health Visitor attached to the child development unit. Before that, no-one had even thought to mention to us that this might be a possibility. Our own HV wasn't the brightest.

Once ordered they came to us direct from the company that supplied them to the NHS.

Isn't it amazing how different the allocation is in each area - I just assumed because in Scotland where we are in London that its up to 6 per day thats what it was nationally. You'd think they'd have a national standard for something like that wouldn't you.
