Parental application for a statement

Recommended Posts

Can i ask how many of you have put in a parental Application for a statement

and was it successful? I've read the links on a previous post but wanted to hear

other parents experiences.

M's school say he is accademically bright and he is but the behavior side and social side are

a struggle for him big time.

Spoken to Parent partnership who say we have a good chance of getting a statement for him.

thanks xx

I requested a statement for two of my daughters, one was sucessful when we threatened to appeal <but we are now appealing against its content, the other was turned down and we are appealing against the decision>

It always seems more difficult if there are no 'conventional' learning problems.

My daughters are both bright too, and this has always been a sticking point whenever we ask for anything.

I put in a parental request in 2005 and was refused.

Then in 2007 after his secondary school placement had gone horribly wrong I requested again, but this time with the support of his school, and it was accepted.

Jay's school applied for one for him and asked me if I would write to the LEA requesting statementing also as they said it would hurry it through if we also put in a written request.

I have applied twice, his primary school once and now his high school are having a go. He has 21 sessions of help a week and I'm told he needs one to one support. We have been advised by the school that my son should go to a local specialist unit as his current school just cant get through to him and guess what he needs a statement. I feel like I am trying to find the Holy Grail. I will be positive and not give up and I wish you tons of good luck with your quest

Hi , I applied myself there were many concerns regarding emotional behaviour learning difficulties etc, he was dx as ASD/ASPERGERS during the assessment process,he was statemented but we had to appeal the hours  , initially 5 then increased to 15, he,s now at an ASD unit and doing well there.Best wishes with your request, it seems there are plenty on here who have been through it and can help you along, good luck suzex

We put in the request for a statutory assessment in November07, and have just received the revised proposed statement (and we're in Hertfordshire - if we can get it, anyone can!)

The school were supportive, but didn't want to request the assessment- told us we should do it.

So... go for it!

I requested a statutory assessment in Feb for T. It was accepted much to my surprise as although T. is behind in some areas of his education his teacher thought that academically he was not far enough behind. I have been told that despite this he does stand a good chance of getting a statement as our LA currently seems to have the policy of turning every request down then backing down if tribunal is mentioned, so they only carry out assessments if they really think a statement is necessary.

I am curently gathering evidence from everyone that has contact with Toby, cub leader, judo instructor, the lot!!

Please don't let anyone be put off by thinking they only agree to statements if there is a problem academically, my DS is above average but his problems are social communciation, anxiety and sensory and this is what the statement should reflect.

Thanks for that, Clare, we are in exactly that position at the moment! We applied for stat assess for DS1 two years ago and he was turned down. Now he's 10 and his anxiety is going off the scale - to the point where he is on the verge of school refusal. I'm just reaching the conclusion that we should try again - but school are very wishy-washy and just don't get it.

We applied for DS2 to be assessed in 2004, it was agreed and a Statement followed just in time for him to start school. We have just successfully appealed to SENDIST and his hours of support have been doubled.

Lizzie xx
