One to one help?

Recommended Posts

How do I get a one to one help for DD for school.

The DR said that its highly likely that she will get a dx of ASD but she wants a second opinion. She said in the meantime the school are to approch her as a ASD child and access all the help and support they can. The school said that unless the DR states in her report that DD needs a one to one they are unlikely to get one. Is this true and am I stuck until the next appointment which I have been warned can take time

Difficult one and sounds like school are ducking out of their responsibilities. I can only talk my my experience and what I know of local provision but here you are very unlikely to get a doctor commenting on the specific type of educational provision a child should have. They can make general recommendations or state that a placement or provision is not working, detrimental to child's mental health etc but Irarely will directly say they need x,y or z. Simply because that is not their area of expertise, they are not educationalists and also because the LEA has been known to turn round and say that health should pay for the 1-2-1 suppor then!

My son has fulltime 1-2-1 support and that was recommended by the outside educational agencies involved (Early Years and Autism Outreach) and Ed Psych. In the end school actually increased the amount of 1-2-1 from 15 hours to fulltime because they felt he was not managing and was being disruptive to the class (had only been at school 3 weeks before this happened) and since he has had fulltime support has been a completely different child.

My son has a statement and once it came through it said in the statement he was to have 25 hours so that then put it in place officially. School still give him 32 hours though. I think your school is walking on dodgy grounds saying it is up to the doctor. They should be making their own assessments or involving the EP. Obviously if you go down the statementing route and succeed it then becomes an obligation for the school.

Sadly I think children who are more disruptive tend to get schools more willing to give them dedicated support off their own back than the quieter children who sit in the corner silently imploding :(

I think that it depends on your local education authority, and the individual school involved - but at the end of the day it comes down to money more often than not. At the very least it might be worth pushing for School Action Plus while you are waiting for a dx, which gives the child additional support, but draws on funds already allocated to the school.

In our case the only time we actually got one to one was when she got a statement. Even now we are struggling to keep the school stepping up to their responsabilities and we are finding increasingly they are removing her one to one to either work in groups or on her own in the name of independance. In our experience, even the consultant's words did not amount to anything at all. We have had to fight tooth and nail for her to get this support and to continue it. Our professionals are warned off big time by the LA if there is the slightest mention of one of them suggesting what a child needs educationally. My son who has more learning difficulties does not even get half the amount of support my daughter does, but the only reason my daughter gets full one to one is because she self harms and mouths everything.

J didnt get 1-1 support in the classroom until he got a statement, before it was small groups and 30 mins a week specialist support that was 1-1.

Now with a statement he gets the specialist support and the group work and 1-1 support, plus social skills support, Support at Dinner time and generally assistance in class and work differenciated to his needs.

I would request an assessment of SEN as this would determin what support she requires.
