Wedding gift advice needed

Help!

I have no idea about this kind of thing.

It's a long time since I went to a wedding and a work colleague is getting married in a couple of weeks. They've said vouchers from a certain department store will be OK, but don't know what amount is right. Another colleague and I might combine and give him a joint gift. We've know him quite well for a number of years and work closely with him - there are only 3 of us altogether.

Any idea what value the vouchers should be?

When I got married, everyone off my department clubbed together and bought me 40 of gift vouchers. I had been working there only 6 months at the time, and I suspect one or two people may have given larger amounts, while others contributed only 1 or something. Most of our close friends and the Ex's work colleagues gave between 20-50 each.

Between 50-100 between the two of you would seem reasonable, depending how much you can spare, how much you like him and whether he invites you to the wedding! Does your colleague have any idea how much he wants to spend? Remember that you also need to buy an outfit to wear.

There are so may imponderables depending on how close you are, whether you are ging to the wedding etc. Best to try and speak to someone else who is going.(safelty in numbers!) I would guess at something like 10-20 if you are not invited to the wedding and 30 or so if you are. The brides mum might be a goosd place to start if you can get the number, they may be the RSVP on the invite?

Yes we are going - not to the actual service, but to the evening reception.

200 - gulp that's way more than I can afford even spilt in half, (and the groom pays my salary so he knows exactly what I earn.) 50 might be more reasonable. I'll speak to my other colleague and see what she thinks.

Outfits - there's another thing - what does one wear to an evening reception nowadays? I think I might be able to get away with a skirt I've got: I don't want to buy something I might not wear again.

Crikey! Everyone's obviously far more generous than me - just call me 'Scrooge'.

The max I'd go to would be 50! Far more likely 30 - 40.

Bang goes my invite to any ASD Forum weddings!

My finger slipped  I meant 100, between the two of you. And that would be top end, like if you were very close friends, which it sounded like you might be.

Someone wore a white dress to my wedding reception, and my brother-in-law wore a gorilla costume.

Well from another Scrooge, I wouldnt be giving more than about 20 per head. Or you could buy them a charity goat - they couldnt complain cos it would look mean spirited :D

Blimey, I must be really mean! For a work colleague I'd be willing to put in 15 max, and that's if I liked them!! If I didn't like them they'd get between 5 and 10!! :o:ph34r:

I think you should pay what you can afford without feeling awkward which will be different for everyone, IYSWIM.

At the moment, if I was buying vouchers I could afford 15 - 20 for a work colleague, 30 if it was a family member.

I'd spend up to 20 for friend, the most i've spent is 100, but that was for my brother - and i quite like him  . But, i hate buying vouchers! I know it's a good idea - so they don't end up with 20 toasters, but it's so cold to me.

Where's the evening do being held K? That might help in choosing what to wear. :D

Hi

I think how much you can afford is the main thing ie don't go without in order to buy a wedding gift. In addition, guess it depends upon how well you know the person (and how much you like them!). Guess good indicator would be to ask if you socialise with them outwith working hours.

If it's a colleague that I know fairly well, I'd go for 15-20 and if it was someone that I know really well, I'd got for 20-30. Close friends and family - I'd spend more.

Caroline.

I think the goat idea is fab

DH bought me a bog, yes it did say bog, in Africa one year :D

Otherwise if you are buying them vouchers I'd probably put in 20 each.

It's good to hear what you all think. I'm thinking about 30 now, but I want to hear what my other colleague wants to do. The two of us are his only work colleagues - it's not like we're in a department of 20 people where you can get away with putting in a fiver!

We do know him fairly well - have worked with him on and off for the past 4 years, but his fiancee I've only met twice.

The reception is being held in a school hall - not too glamorous a venue. Is black still a no no at weddings? I have a very nice black dress.

Don't worry Bagpuss, it's something I remember my mum telling me back in the dark ages and it may not have been a British thing.

It depends on the weather really - the black dress is long sleeved and a bit heavy if the temperature is in the 70's.

Whatever I do - I will definitely have to have new shoes.
