School isn't helping

Recommended Posts

My dd(12) is ASD,ADHD,Dyspraxia and complex learning difficulties, we have just had her school report which seems to be a load of *******. They tell us that she is exceding expectations in her mathematics and working at level 2.5. She can'teven add 17 and 12 together. Her behaviour is apparently acceptable and she MUST NOT be told off or get into trouble unless the teaching staff are sure she knows what she's doing is wrong but how will she ever know what's really acceptable and wrong if she isn't told about it. She is in mainstream school but spends most of her time in the SENCO dept. It's as though the school are tolerating her rather than trying to teach her anything. We are getting so angry even the GP says we must start shouting more at school but I'm getting so tired of shouting. She went thriugh primary with me shouting and screaming for help for her and we thought that when she started secondary last september things would get better. No such luck. We're on the verge of pulling her out of school but don't want her to miss out on her education. HELP any suggestions?? :wallbash:

does your dd have a statement? Are the school keeping you informed of any progress ie IEPs ? have you considered an independent specialist school? good luck let me know what you decided.

hi julie1

dd was put on statement when she first started secondary with 25hours per week. It did state that she would benefit from one TA who she could get to know and who would get to know her, unfortunately school have told us that this isn't very practical and convinced all involved that multiple TA's would be better for her. Since she's been at secondary I haven't seen any IEP's so don't know of any progress.

Will keep you informed. We've got parents evening coming up in 2 weeks. Should be a bundle of laughs(not)

Hope I've calmed down by then :bounce:

I would write a strong letter to your SENCO and state that the school are not meeting her SEN and following her Statement, you should have had at least two IEPs by now, and that the changes in TA will add considerable amount of difficulties due to her special needs, I would may be request an other assessement in regaurds her maths, and have it tested, Im not sure in relations to scores in your LA. but a level 2.5 here is actually below her peers age group, so she could still be considerably behind her peers, here in our area children in Js class Yr 6 are achieving level 5, the target is a level 4 and apropriate for their age.

I would may be look at some specialist school and compare the different aproaches, the main reason the teachers may not be wanting to be identifying her failairs incase it decreases confidence and self esteem or it could be to hide her real struggle so they dont meet those in her sen needs.

I think if the GP is on board you need to go back and explain to him the situation and maybe ask him if he could write a supporting letter to get your daughter more support at school and express that the different TA is causing considerable amount of stress because she doesnt know them and even if she does it is still change that she will find hard especially in a learning situation.

It needs to be in writing with date and her date of birth clearly visable, with school and address, write a briefe discription and what your expectations are and then if still nothing is done then write to the LEA SEN department, and then if still nothing is done you could ask for a reassessment of her SENs.

Good Luck, let us know how you get on.

In my experience you have to battle every thing that involves money. Keep fighting you no what your dd needs, good luck telling the lea.

We also are fighting for one lsa who is elklan trained, it is not easy and wears us down, but that is what the lea want so we all back off and give them a easy life. I will not back down so lea watch out...

It doesn't stop when you withdraw them from the State Education system. I am still battling for slanderous remarks to be removed from my sons record i.e I was starving him and his aggressive father is/was a good role model for him and the best. My non appearance at the school run social evenings, down the pub I might add (I don't drink), was not helping his emotional and social needs :o:wacko: I should also add the removal of another child's details from my sons records which the LEA are refusing to remove but will add a note stating that I disagree with the entry  cough! erm of course I beeping do. He is not my son. He is some else's son! :wallbash::wallbash:
