hi

we have a realy child freindly dentist, i let g know that he is going to spin him in the chair which is magic cos it spins and gos up and down, but it still takes an age for the dentist to look in his mouth but he dose not rush him, so it is keep relaxed, he usally ends up on my knee while he looks at him, but he has never had to have any work done yet (god help me when he dose) but for now i try and make it a fun thing, worked so far. i i hope it gos well for reece because lets face us as adults dont like going never mind our children. take care >:D<<'> for reece

Hi, my son had big probs with the dentist when he was younger. His teeth were bad etc, but he would,nt let the dentist near to treat him.Our dentist referred us to a community dentist who specialise d in nervous patients and those with special needs etc.We went several times and during each visit the dentist got him used to equipment, having gas etc.All part of what he needed to get used to.They decieded not to fill in the end but extracted 3 teeth over a 6 wk period.I really struggled with my boy, but he had got to the point where they were gonna knock him out, hospital etc and he needed this treatment.I really kept on at him that he had to have it done and he needed to work with everyone and be brave. They were very careful to make sure nothing hurt him etc.Best of luck with it, suzex

All of my kids have always been fine with the dentist... amazingly.

However, Bill hates cleaning his teeth and only does so when specifically TOLD to. You'd think his teeth would've suffered but they haven't because he doesn't eat sweets... he only ever had one filling and that was when he was 4... a tiny filling in a baby tooth. Which was an ordeal for very different reasons (probably the most embarrasing Bill related story in all the 14 1/2 years he's been on the planet

I on the other hand have to take sedation before any treatement!

My son always used to play up at the dentist and he's had a few meltdowns there too. I found taking him and letting him see me in the chair and looking in my mouth helped. He doesn't like trying new things but once he has seen someone else experience it, he processes it and then usually will have a go next time.

My OH took my son for his check up when he went for his (DS had been about 5 times previously and not got in the chair!). He got in the chair fine and now keeps asking when he can go back! He did tell me that he doesn't like the feel of the plastic gloves near his mouth which would explain why he didn't want to get in the chair. Seeing my OH have his teeth checked made him feel at ease :)

My nervousness must've rubbed off on him!!

Hope you got on okay! :)

Awww big well done, my son hates the dentist, he had to have a tooth out at a specialist and they told his usual dentist to send him to the hospital next time to be knocked out as he wasn't going to be bitten again

With the meds, he might put it on himself, or if he'll let you brush his teeth you could put the bonjela on a brush.

Gad to hear it. Thank goodness it's ulcers, although they're really sore, poor wee thing.

Hope they clear up soon- was going to suggest Calgel but if he doesn't like normal bonjela, that might not work either....

Incidentally, I found this site a while back, and thought this link to this toothpaste might be of use for those of you whose kids aren't great with all things dental. It contains xylitol (helps reduce bacteria and infections in mouth) and has no SLS etc in it either.

http://www.mouthulcers.co.uk/index.html#Squigle

That wont take you directly to the toothpaste, but the one I'm on about begins with an S and sounds like wriggle. ;)

for the bonjela phobic (me included) i'd recommend bonjelas teething one. it is vaguely banana-y but mostly tastes of nothing and is milder so it doesn't sting so much. i can't stand the regular kind and hate mint so the cool one is no good either.
