is there such a thing as an adult assessment centre?

Recommended Posts

hi guys, sorry not been on in an age.

im sure ive heard of places that you can go to be assessed as to whether you are AS/ASD as an adult, some of them needing a fmaily member such as a parent to back up info?

ive been to my gp several times and have even been referred to councelling but i am not getting anywhere and i would really like to see whether or not i actually am on the spectrum. my doc agrees i poss am, my parents and hubby agree i prob am... but i cant seem to be able to get any further in the process.

can anyone help with info?

i know the NAS have a helpline to call to get info but i loathe phones and only use them when i absolutely have to, and it takes ages of running the conversation through my head before i can do it, drives me bonkers cause even now im writing this im doing it!

what did people here do to get an adult diagnosis?

thanks much appreciated xxx

The NAS also have an Email Helpline so you can avoid phones and still get some information.

I went to the Cambridge Lifespan Asperger Syndrome Service, CLASS, which at the time were taking nationwide referrals but now seem only to take local referrals so I don't know if this is any use to you.

yes it may be a good idea to try e-mailing the NAS to see if their is anything available in your area. e-mail is soo much easyer than using a phone!

hopefully someone else can offer better advice.

I got my diagnosis by emailing the NAS (this following the NHS coming to a complete halt and doing nothing). They provided a list of private specialists (who they recognise as being 'worthy') in my area and from there it was just a case of sending some further emails to find out what each of them did, how they diagnosed and, more importantly, how much they charged

Hi

My husband was diagnosed at the NAS Lorna Wing Centre by Professor Gould. We obtained funding for the diagnosis through our local authority learning disability team, though this took a few months to obtain. I think they do see clients privately too though. I attended with my husband and we supplied a statement from his mother about his early development and childhood, though I don't think this parent statement was essential for a diagnosis, but it helped provide a fuller picture.

Good luck

Delyth

Thats good that you saying its not essential to get a parents statement. My mummy is dead, i dont know my dad and i havent spoken to my family for 8 years so there is NO way i can get such a statement. Might try and contact an old teacher.

Contacting a teacher would be useful - having someone who knew you as a child is useful to help them see that you have had the issues you present with across your life. I had all my old school reports from the age of 2 1/2 which I took and these were used as they're pretty revealing about the difficulties I have/had.

MY school reports are pretty useless in that sense as they are all mostly grades and percentages with only a small paragraph mostly about the subject. The only thing it says about me is asks lots of questions!!

they need a statement from childhood because one of the criteria for diagnosing AS and other ASDs is that they are evidently present throughout life from a very early age. my first diagnosis, they just asked me some questions about things i could remember or had been told about that were in any way unusual ie at my second birthday party my parents lost me, and in the end found me at the bottom of the neighbours garden happily playing on my own as far away as i could get instead of joining in the party games.
