What does Easter mean to you.

Recommended Posts

For me it is just another day, I dont even get any extra days of work.

I have no religious beliefs so other than people giving me chocolate (Which is always welcome) it has no significance at all apart from the school holidays.

Just wondering what others feel about it.

I think it has different meaning for everyone,as in your case chris, not everyone believes in the true meaning of Easter(just like Christmas!)

I am religious and actually Easter for me and most christians is even bigger than Christmas as our sins have been forgiven. We also give up things for lent, some of us fast for the whole of lent(I only fast on Good Friday)To end the fast and Lent we celebrate Easter and that is why we give each other eggs or anything sweet. This is the same for some other religious festivals ie.Ramadan and Pass Over.

I do think it is over commercialised but this is the same for Christamas,Valentines etc.

As for working,I have,in the past, always worked over Easter and Christmas,it is especially difficult as it means I cant attend church and celebrate with my family.I think if you dont celebrate it as a religious occasion what would be the point of not going in to work, and many people who have different religions often have to work over their "holidays" or they are forced to take it as a normal annual leave.

I feel sad that Jesus died for us, but uplifted that he is resurrected, like a new start and that he is always with us.

easter for me is all the religious things, plus a lot of chaos. i organised a craft morning on good friday for 50 kids, and then this afternoon we had an easter egg hunt so its a lot of running around doing community outreach (everyones welcome to both events). i dont like chocolate so i generally dont get eggs.

sounds hectic, I dont eat chocolate either, so treat myself to some wonderful flowers, look really nice on the windowsill.

Wasn't she the woman who did 'that's life'? And aren't you supposed to eat sossidges at this time of year? 'Sossidges, Easter...'

Seriiously, Easter doesn't have very much relevance to me as a religious festival, but like xmas i do make a point of explaining what it's about to Ben, because i think the ideas underpinning the religious connotations are worthwhile ones... i got very annoyed a few years ago at one of ben's school easter concerts at the church when a mum complained about the children being told such a 'gruesome' story.... She was probably quite happy to let them sit and watch the news and things like eastenders with her, detailing all the worst aspects of our society, but a story of personal sacrifice, morals, courage, higher ideals etc (whether real or myth) obviously just gets in the way of all the chokklit and fluffy bunnies in her eyes. :wallbash:

happy easter, believers and non-believers alike. I'm feeling rather stuffed, having just eaten a largish slice of GF/DF simnel cake (pick off the marzipan and save the best till last!)

Just had my sister on the phone who is strict catholic. Having had spent most of the weekend in church she is somewhat put out right now. Today whiles in church she had her hand bag, money keys etc, stolen. Yes that's right one of the congregation help themselves.

We do talk about religious beliefs, my son goes to a church school and takes part in all the school and church services there. I try not to impose my beliefs, or lack of them on my son. I want him to grow up with an open mind.

My wife did, a few years ago start,(restart) going to church but did not keep going long, when asked, she said that she did not get out of going what she had hoped to.

I don't like the way Easter has become so commercialised. Some people now are choosing to recieve gifts like clothes instead of chocolate eggs! For me, Easter is not a time to receive gifts, and never has been in my family. I always buy my parents an Easter egg, this year I got one for my brother and his girlfriend because there was a special offer on, normally I would not bother. My parents normally buy me an egg, this year I got a chocolate bar instead. My mum still talks about the legendary year that I was given SIX Easter eggs, these days it would not be unusual for a child to receive six or more Easter eggs.

When I worked in a supermarket, Easter was a time of really hard work (Easter week is the 2nd busiest week of the year in retail). As I had to work Easter Saturday it left me with only one day off and I wasn't able to travel home to be with my family, so volunteered to work Easter Sunday the past two years. This year is the first time I've ever had a 4-day weekend off for Easter!

Happy Easter every1, yes it is over commercialised like christmas. My son goes to a catholic school 7 with As, takes it very seriously, Bless him. I just dont want to be disappointed when he gets older, expecting that every one is full of goodness and all that. I believe in God and yes I am humbled by it, and very far from being perfect.
