How does having Autism / Aspergers affect YOU?

Recommended Posts

Great thread!

It affects me negatively

I have a low tolerance for teasing

I get upset and confused and I'm unable to react in the expected way to that upset confusion

I have an addictive personality

I try and cram my days in then I'm unable to decide what to cancel

I learn common sense stuff later than NTs (but I do learn it)

I can be poor at getting my point accross in forums making people think ive said

stuff that I haven't (ie ive implied things without realising)

Bad at telling people "no I don't want your help" (instead I tend to get really negative with them)

Difficulty reading folk, some of my friends are easier to read than others

I'm more literal than others and it's worse when I'm worked up

It affects me positively

I can absorb "useless information" making my quite good at quiz shows

I am a loyal girlfriend

I can see the USS Defiant going into the wormhole on DS9 and it's a speck of light!

I can hear trains from nearly 2 miles away (have checked timetables to make sure im not imagining it)

I have strong instincts

My initiative for most things is unaffected by my aspergers

I have bags of enthusiasm, drive and ambition

I feel for other people although it can be overloading at times

I've received the nickname of social ambassador by one group of autistics

I can sit on my local committee of parents and empathise with them

I have represented the views and wishes of my social groups at various meetings

I am the social secretary for the 2 social groups in my area and I keep trying to encourage participation of members

In an emergency I can have a cool head and managed to prevent a bad situation getting disastrous at one pub group meal

last year

Great at giving advice but i have to remember to ask someone "do you want my advice"

I'm interested in autism, disability and how peoples minds work

There has to be a reason for everything and I tend to find it where others haven't

I praise people for so called "little things" because I appreciate their effort

Hi

AS affects me in the following ways

I can not deal with criticism or being corrected

I have difficulty accepting compliments

I am very sarcastic and negative about things

I can not maintain eye contact and find social situations a complete nightmare

I can get angry and sometimes don't even know why I am getting angry

I have bad insomnia due to anxiety problems

I often Interrupt friends in the middle of a conversation which they find annoying

If my routine gets changed at short notice I get very anxious, angry and upset.

I have a lot of ocd

Not realizing cretin Hygiene issues such as picking nose and licking knife at dinner table (really do need to stop this one drove my mum nuts lol)

I have difficulty with relationships

It takes me a long time to trust someone

I have odd interests such as prescription medications and gangs

I feel that I come across to other people as being very serious

I always ware the same kind of clothes and a lot of my clothes are blue something which my mum is trying to sort out for my lol

Find it hard to read people

Ask a lot of questions about things a lot of which are to re-assure myself.

These are all i can think off at the moment would be interesting to get a family member or close friend to do this for me from there perspective

Hi I am a new member. I don't have AS or any other autistic spectrum condition but my 10yrs old son has Aspergers.

He is affected in the following ways but I expect this to change to a degree when he goes through puberty and adolescence.

Positivley

He is very polite

will not break a rule

he asborbs information like a sponge and I can't wait to take him to his first pub quiz

he is very loving and affectionate

very friendly (but this can be a negative when out shopping)

doesn't need any help with his homework at all (definately a good thing)

negatively

he has no volume control on his voice

he is very literal

gets upset and frustrated very easily

very repetative

not very tolerant

no concept of stranger danger

I wouldn't swap him for the world!! >:D<<'>

How AS Affects me? hmm, i could spend weeks debating this with myself and not get anywhere so i'm just going to list the big show stoppers for me.

Positively:

  • i'm very driven by my interests (though some would say obsessive)
  • i try to think before i act
  • i prefer to speak politely
  • i like helping people (sometimes, depends on day)
  • Sponge up loads of useless information from everywhere
  • i don't panic in a situation
  • i will stick by people(well, this really does depend, i have made myself sick worrying before :/)
  • i can hear things above most peoples audible range and at very quiet volumes
  • i love routine and order (even if i struggle to keep it at times)
  • overly patient (can be a problem too)

Negatively:

  • get depressed easily from worrying (in the past it didn't matter so much)
  • i have anxiety about everything(to some degree)
  • i'm an insomniac, sometimes i can stay awake for 48 hours strait
  • i struggle with keeping conversation interesting and i know i can have this selfish appearance
  • too scared to speak my mind
  • i explode at random times, often throwing my routine off
  • i have tinnitus (or ringing in the ear) which gets worse when i'm panicking due to the noise (which doesn't help)
  • Sunlight gives me really, really bad headaches
  • i walk like i'm on stilts (or waddle, depends on how i slept)
  • i take things too seriously(not an exact bad thing, just have to spend more time analysing other peoples speech)

plus most of what

It affects me negatively
