Alternative to ketchup

Recommended Posts

Hi

Does anyone know an alternative to ketchup? My youngest has been getting bad eczema for the past 2 months. I did not know what the cause was so I have been removing certain foods to find the trigger.I have taken ketchup out for three days and it cleared up( just a bit dry, which is helped with his cream) The trouble is he is on a very limited diet, has always been,so I don't want him to stop eating. I don't know what it is in the ketchup so I am hoping to either make my own or find an alternative, any suggestions?

It depends which ingredient in the ketchup is making the eczema worse - if its tomatoes your kinda stuck - if its sugar or salt they might offer alternatives with this reduced - don't know what else is in it :)

I know someone who used to make salsa dips when they were on a low carb diet - but I don't know if this is relevant or not...

Tomatoes are a common allergy in little ones, so without going through all the ingredients individually, that's the most likely culprit. BBQ sauce is heavily tomato based, but I'm not sure about brown sauce - however my DD refuses to entertain anything other than 'red dippy sauce' so I hope your DS is more amenable.

(((hugs))) hope you find a solution.

Passata is a good alternative too - thick but not as concentrated as purée. But if tomatoes are causing it, as RB has suggested, you'll have to look for a completely different product.

Thanks everyone. I don't think it is the tomatoes, well since he was a year old he was eating whole tomatoes (Sam had left a tomatoe on a coffee table once and Eli managed to get hold of it.) He never had any reaction, saying that it has been about 6-8 months since he did that so unsure if he developed a reaction in that time.

I may try some of the suggestions, though he still has not asked for any ketchup so things are looking good. Thanks alot.
