petet Report post Posted November 25, 2005 Hello... We need help finding birthday & christmas presents for our 14yr old son who is a classic Kanner autistic (the hand-flapping, pronoun reversed type). Problem is - his interests are so limited that he never seems to need or get much in the way of presents and this means A ) We feel mean. B ) We have problems satisfying the relations who 'cop out' by giving us money and telling us to buy "something for Alec". He doesn't need any more toy cars/planes/torches/DVDs He likes splashing and looking through binoculars, but those needs are already met. Any suggestions welcome. bid Report post Posted November 25, 2005 Hi I don't know whether this would be appropriate, but Tomy make a sort of board that is magnetic, and onto this you can place a series of cogs. It's battery-driven, so then all the cogs go round. This has proved to be very popular where I work. Sorry if you have already got this! Bid If you're interested I'll take a proper look tomorrow when I'm at work and PM it's name.

mossgrove Report post Posted November 25, 2005 Argos do quite a selection of rope lights, light balls and other goodies, if you got him a selection and put them in a dark room he would have somewhere to go and chill out when things get to much. I tried a google search and couldn't find it so ended up getting my MIL to pick it up in the States (They're coming over for Christmas, for 3.5 weeks ) and bring it over. It looks fab - Logan loves gear toys (coz they spin) so will adore the Gearation. Lynne
bid Report post Posted November 26, 2005 Oooh, and if you got a bubble tower you could set up a sort of mini sensory room!! Lynne: don't know the answer to that one, I'm afraid...just seen it at work. I'm off there in about 10 mins (how sad am I on Krism while I have my breakfast) so I'll check the name. Malika Report post Posted November 26, 2005 Hi The other day walking along Woolsworth they were showing a kind of bubble maker with music it is battery driven there were bubbles everywhere it was lovely. Best of luck. Malika.
petet Report post Posted November 26, 2005 Thanks all. Bubble tower we already have (water's a bit murky though, maybe he'd like a 2 gallon plastic container of Halfords DI water for Christmas!! ). Rope lights - Definite possiblity, but they don't 'retain interest' for long enough. We have a LED flashy-light ball, and that's very popular. Koosh-balls are 'phobic items' - so we have to be careful with things like that. The Tomy magnetic board sounds good - I'll go and hunt for one.. What he really needs is a slave!! To run and fetch lemonade, breadsticks chocolate fingers, pringles and custard creams (auty-food) and to bounce him on the trampoline.

katkin Report post Posted November 27, 2005 Hi Petet, what about looking at the specialist catalogues for ideas? www.rompa & www.liberator are two, sometimes they have really good things that are wildly expensive but then you can find similar things in Wilkinsons or woolworths The other thing that comes to mind is those books with the push button sounds on one side - normally related to disney or a film. I can think of quite a few children who like those. Love Kat
Viper Report post Posted November 27, 2005 What about setting up a tropical fish tank. The relatives money can help pay and a small one is not too expensive. The fish are calming and provide a constantly movine ornament. My son loves our fish tanks. Viper.
invent 10 things b4 breakfast Report post Posted November 27, 2005 My son loves his lava lamp. I put it on every night an hours or son before he goes to bed so that it gets going and I turn it off when I go to bed, it's very relaxing. How about story tapes? I go to Waterstones and they sell great audio books. My son has just got into Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe and they sell the whole series (6 books I think), but there are all sorts of tapes/cds for all age groups and some quite funny ones That cog game is called "Clever Cogs" I got it a few years ago and my 3 year old is now into it, not sure if they still make it, couldn't find it on Toys R Us Hope you find something! petet Report post Posted November 30, 2005 Thanks again for all the ideas... We used to have a fishtank and he would wait til we were out of the room and use it for splashing. We would find "things" floating in it! Rompa and Liberator are full of ideas - way too pricey though and I'm off to the workshop to make my own stuff. Lava lamp is definitely on the list. Plus new water for bubble tower and some different fake fish. New torch too.. (Not that there's anything wrong with the old one!)
Guest flutter Report post Posted November 30, 2005 u can get wind up torches? that mite be intersting
smallworld Report post Posted November 30, 2005 Hi, I think wind up torches are a great idea ! But then you can't take out the batteries to stop kids reading in bed at midnight Why oh why, do I keep buying torches ? I know I'll be upstairs confiscating several every night, no wonder when we have a power cut we can't find a torch that works perhaps I'll ask for a wind-up torch ? and hide it ? but would I then be able to find it in the dark without cracking my shins......? wac
