katysmum Report post Posted December 10, 2005 Hi all I feel the need for a good rant- get it all off my chest! you all must be sick of me doing this so apologies in advance! I'm debating when to get the christmas decorations out?? Have to do it soon to keep my other 3 kids happy, but katy doesnt cope well with it all- strange things all over the houce etc. And then theres the obligatory trip to santa. She will speak to him now, but doesn't get why he gives her a little prezzie when she's just told him what she wants! Then there's the upset at school- when they should be doing numeracy, they are practising for the christmas play- AAAHHH- thats enough to send katy's behaviours into overdrive, her routine has gone and she is confused! lil_me Report post Posted December 10, 2005 I know how you feel on this one, I only have 2 boys, one who is ASD and dislikes any decorations up etc and refuses to believe in Santa (he's 6) and a 4 year old who loves it and his only obsession is xmas lights. So we are doing a comprimise. Only putting the tree and stockings up in living room (bought a smalller tree) everything else is going up in Mr Christmas Mad's room. Its going to be like Santas grotto in there but keeps them both happy. They are going on a Santa Cruise (meeting Santa on a boat trip) agreed to if my oldest can goto the Sealife Centre after Xmas, keeping everyone happy isn't easy but I am hoping we've cracked it this year. ceecee Report post Posted December 10, 2005 I think from what I understand Christmas can be a stressful time for lots(but not all) people with A.s..The change of routine, the mess and chaos, the inevitable socialising, the extreme emotions often on show.All in all can be a bit of a nightmare. I have mild A.S. and cope with christmas fairly well I think but I am always glad when it's over and we can get back to normal And yes i have a tree and decorations up but cant wait to take them down Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

No two days are the same at school and do we know about it. the refusal to go to school, the tantrums when something different happens is just getting too much. rainbow queen Report post Posted December 10, 2005 i took my son to see father christmas last year at a fair in school hall- well ill never do it again he refused to go near him and didnt want to get pressy off him,held all the que up and started screaming he screamed all the way home-it was most awfull and from now on will not attempt it again its shame he still thinks xmas means that time he went to the school fair he cant imagine he comes down chimney he excepts the tree up though ,but he doesnt get involved in the way other children do,like taking pleasure decorating it or stuff hed rather go on pc Quote Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Kerre, my daughter loves Christmas too - she especially likes tinsel and lights - anything that sparkles. She hates crackers though because of the sudden loud noise and this is always a problem on Christmas day as she refuses to come to the table till all the crackers have been pulled. Strange girl Report post Posted December 11, 2005 My son loves everything about Christmas- especially not having to go to school! I am taking him to Santa Land and hope he will enjoy it. Christmas around here is very quiet for us. We have no relatives, and friends are away with thier families, so its just a fortnight of me, my son and our cat. It sounds like a woeful tale of lonely sadness but in actual fact its the peace on earth and silent night scenario we quite enjoy. I feel worse knowing we are supposed to have all these people and busy hussle and bustles, than I do about not having it. If that makes sense.. It would be nice to have Christmas dinner though. My son wouldn't touch any traditional christmas foods- he doesn't like mince pies, christmas pudding, cranberries, turkey, well.. you get the idea. And I can't justify turkey for one. Still we are ok with crackers and I get to eat all the pies and we can still wear silly hats and read rubbish jokes to each other so bring it on.. The turkey (alright), Stuffing , parsnips , those little sausage things wrapped in bacon (alright) and crackers with their rubbish jokes. The presents are good though. Klou Report post Posted December 11, 2005 Love the avatar Mum 22 boys! Anyway, our tree is up and friends came for christmas dinner today, except we had chicken not turkey. We will do proper christmas on the right day but explained to DS that this was a sort of christmas party. He seemed happy with the idea. He loves the tree and adores the lights. We even have them outside this year. BIG HIT!! However he has been hyper for two days and was beside himself when the friends and their kids came. He ate next to nothing till everyone had gone and thankfully the children played nicely. Their very sensible Dad said it was time to go when the squabbles started. When we went on the steam train santa special it was a walk through thing and DS just took his present and ran through. We didn't even get a photo! I think he was more excited about the train bit! katysmum Report post Posted December 12, 2005 Hi all Thanks for listening all. Decided I will just put up a fibre optic tree this year, and keep the rest of the decor to a minimum. Kids finish school on friday so will do it over the weekend and get all the kids to help- that way it will be a gradual process for katy. Also keeping pressies to a minimum. Katy doesn't "play" so christmas is terrible for her when she gets pressies from people she is expected to play with. Hope that makes sense! She'll just be getting books( she reads all the time!) and decorative things for her room. Just being able to write all this makes it all seem easier to do!!!!
