amberzak Report post Posted February 11, 2006 How long does it take to be diagnosed from the moment the GP refers you to see a specialist? And what help is there during the diagnoses procedure. Can I get Disabled Student Grant?

mum22boys Report post Posted February 12, 2006 I had my son referred by my GP to CAMHS last June. They at the time had a wait of 6-9 months but luckily he was seen within 4 weeks. We then had to wait until January to see the peadiatritian who will assess M. The wait for her to assess is over a year. There are only twelve children on the list but only one clinic seeing one child every month with only 10 clinics a year. So by the time M will be seen and hopefully dianosed we will have been waiting between one and a half to two years. Hope this helps. mum22boys
TuX Report post Posted February 13, 2006 If going to be seen by adult primary care... First, there is the time to wait until the GP appointment [this can be long in certain places],then it can be around 6 months to get an appointment with a specialist, and once at that stage-the time to get diagnosed, can depend on: *How much childhood history/evidence is provided *How subtle or profound/severe the symptoms are,and whether other conditions and LDs are present *The length of appointments *The experience of the specialist *The borough/area lived in [it really differs all over the country, some have to wait months more than others] At the end of the first appointment I went to,the pysch told me what he suspected, and on the second appointment got multiple diagnosis',without needing to speak to any of my family. The waiting list, diagnosis process and time will vary though.
lotty Report post Posted February 13, 2006 How long does it take to be diagnosed from the moment the GP refers you to see a specialist? And what help is there during the diagnoses procedure. Can I get Disabled Student Grant? Hi I got diagnosed via my university, I was struggling with my dissertation and went to see the counselor there cos i was misserable, i talked about my attention problems etc etc, and she sent me to see the student support staff who said i needed an assesment with the educational psychologist at student support, they gave me an urgent app, i got assessed, it took hours, and four days later he explained what was wrong, aspergers dyspraxia and dyslexia and erlens syndrome, he is typing up my official diagnosis ans sending it to the lea, and i am qualified for the disabled students grant, with this you dont lterally get any money but you get eqipment that comes to a few thousand pounds, desk , 700 quid chair, laptop software printer etc etc, well worth it and fast diagnosis, then help from the ed psych, plus one to one tutorr help...so if thats what you meant do it through uni, as you can only qualify for the disabled student grant through your uni, and alsoeven with diagnosis, you will have to do it again in this way anyway
