Bens allergic to penicillin

Recommended Posts

I have just realised that Ben is allergic to penicillin. He has had it many times and every time he has the most dreadful diarrhoea. I never thought about it before.

Well today as usual he started to poop and (Sorry) it smelt the same and looked the same as it always dose when he's on it, for some reason it clicked. I rung the GP to ask if it could be an allergy and he said I have to take him in this afternoon to get him checked out and change his Meds. All these years I have given it to him and never twigged the diarrhoea was a reaction. I feel so awful. I just thought it was just the way he was, god how stupid can I be, I really hate myself sometimes, why don't I stop and think? :wallbash:

William is allergic to penecilin. He had it when he was a baby and came out in the most awful rash and was shaking and vomiting.

Viper, you need to make sure you remind every doctor about it because quite often they forget or don't see it on their notes. William had tonsilitis a few weeks ago and the doctor printed off a prescription to penecillin, just as well I noticed.

Dot's bowel problems were triggered by one dose of penicillin at 14 months old, my healthy, bouncy baby changed overnight - she stopped eating and returned to the breast, lost so much weight she was under a consultant till 5 years old for failure to thrive. She has never really recovered and at 9 is seeing a bowel specialist because of her continuing problems which are comparable to severe IBS but they won't diagnose that at such a young age. It also left her with appalling eating habits and triggered reactions to certain foods - mainly the healthy ones like certain fruit.

She has never had another dose of any antibiotic, they will only be given again in very serious circumstances, ordinary illness such as tonsillitis or ear infections she just has to live through. The GP says there is some advantage in this as it allows her to build better natural immunity and I must admit that she is very rarely ill with anything that might be treated with an antibiotic but it isn't nice to have to let her suffer.

Hope Ben isn't affected long term like Dot, most don't react so badly and can usually use other antibiotics - beware of any of the -cillin ones though.

Hi Viper,

I'm also allergic to penicillin - make sure you let the GP know as soon as possible (just a phone call will do) so it goes down on the front of his notes as there are many other meds related to penicillin which may also cause an allergy.

There are loads of other antibiotics they can use instead - there's no point in him suffering unnecesarily.

I ,m allergic to penicillen too, but the reaction I had was very severe and I was hospitalised.Just a thought but the diarohea could just be not eating much and taking medicine. My kids have all been loose when on penicillen, or perhaps now it could have been they were allergic too it.Just a thought don,t want you to panic too much, hope Bens o,k.

It turns out it is a reaction to Sorbitol. The sugar replacement in amoxicillin. It causes diarrhoea in some people. Not life threatening but still not what you need when you are already sick and can't eat much. He has a different one now so hopefully it will be better.

The GP was really good and made him another appointment for next week. She said he will never get one from the receptionist and wants to keep an eye on him. There is still a chance his eardrum could perforate, he is still a sick little boy. :tearful:

Umm, thought diarreah (sp?) was a side effect of taking antibiotics?? I didn't know it was an allergy reaction!

T has been on amoxicillin for a few days now and he has diarreah, thought it was normal! :(

Viper, don't beat yourself up over it hun. He's come away unscathed and that's what metters! (((HUGS)))

Sorbitol is found in some toothpastes, so can be swallowed or absorbed through the gums that way. Also its sometimes found in vaccines, so it might be worth checking if he ever needs an injection, in case an alternative is available.

Hope he feels better soon.
