  1. That's wonderful news - I'm really pleased for you. Just out of interest is not being keen to try new foods and having a problem with certain types of food a typical AS symptom? I was very fussy as a kid and still have a lot of food 'rules'. I have a phobia about baked beans and runny egg, and have very strict rules about tomatoes and fruit.
  2. Sorry if I came across as arrogant in my post. It was silly of me. I don't have experience of language learning as related to AS/Autism so I can't really claim to know what I was talking about. I hope I didn't cause offence. Maybe I'm just bitter because my Mum and Dad are both French speakers and didn't bother teaching me a word of it!
  3. Hi baddad, It's a Q yes! It stands for quetzalcoatlus, an early winged dinosaur. My username was also the title of a 50s B movie involving the flying lizard causing mayhem in a city. So do you think they'd be interest in a thread discussing social problems experienced by Aspies? It might help carers also to understand the thought processes of their loved ones?
  4. Thankyou Baddad! BTW what's Hi 'G'? Anyway thanks for the link. Is this site just Asperger parents then? I was hoping to start a thread on social experiences and trying to dissect what it is us aspies are missing. I find it interesting from an intellectual point of view as well as personal.
  5. It's rubbish to say that learning another language would confuse him. Young children's brains are geared up for learning language and it can only be a good thing for him to learn two. Adults make the mistake of thinking that because languages are difficult to pick up for them that they are for children which is utter nonsense. Studies show that children growing up speaking two languages have no trouble with it. It's no different for AS children. Yes, they might struggle with language more generally but I don't see that it could do any harm. Don't make a big issue out of it - just do it. Kids are very adaptable and accepting creatures - I'm sure it will pay dividends later.
  6. Good answer Baddad! I was always accused of being shy to the extent where I believed it myself, but as I've got older I've realised it's not the case. It's a combination of not being interested in talking to people and also as you mention this 'feeling' that I'm missing something, that there's obviously some hidden thing that everyone does naturally in social situations that I don't have. It's very frustrating indeed and I still don't know what it is I'm missing, but I go pretty much mute when in a social group but not out of shyness.
  7. Hi there, Though I haven't been diagnosed thanks to a lousy doctor who laughed at me and said AS was something children get diagnosed with, I am fairly certain I have it. I am interested in chatting with other sufferers to compare experiences. I have so many social problems that are really difficult to explain, vitually impossible to non-sufferers, so was wondering if anyone here would like to chat. What's prompted this is the fact that I started a night class this year. At 33 I assumed that the problems I had at school would be long gone (teacher picking on me for being quiet, other students thinking I'm weird etc etc) but it's the same!! At 33!! It just doesn't make sense. I have so many questions about it. Can anyone help or relate?
  8. Boing. Topics move too quickly on this forum - I've spent ages looking for this one again and then I didn't get any ###### reply! I feel a grudge coming on!
  9. I'm on the spectrum and I have great difficulty in both these areas. I'd never really thought about its link with AS but I suppose you're right. I tend to get very paranoid and think everyone is against me or ganging up on me. Maybe its because we have difficulty reading signs we find it hard to get closure on these issues. I am still bitter about all the bullying I suffered at school too, amongst other things!
  10. I love your periodic table - did you design it? I've seen a few of these on the internet and yours is by far the best! A while ago I decided to memorize all the elements and their abbreviations, numbers etc so I've had a good look at many tables. I also like your website as I'm a book lover myself.
  11. I was just wondering if anyone knew whether complete disinterest in music was a classic AS sign or not? I've never seen it listed anywhere but it's one of my quirks - I'm just not bothered about any music. I know some autistic spectrum people have an amazing gift for it but can you also be in the other direction? Anyone who's known of this in AS I'd love to hear from you.
  12. It's funny that you mention that he is obsessed with Hoovers. My Dylan who is 3 1/2 now used to be the same with Hoovers. At one point his favourite thing was looking at the Argus catalogue at the Vacuum cleaner's section! He also lines things up and gets very upset when our 1 yo inevitably messes the order up. His imaginative play is also very structured on his terms and he gets annoyed if you try to change the scenario. I really don't know if these symptoms are AS or not and at the moment I'm not worrying about it because he's happy and he's a wonderful child. So try not to worry, just enjoy him and his individual ways. If it does turn out he has AS then you'll be really glad you just enjoyed his toddlership rather than worrying about him - if that makes sense?!
  13. You're not alone, dude! I don't have any friends either. I guess it's because I just don't understand the rules, or realise that there are any. It's very frustrating. But then again people get on my nerves so easily that most of the time I'm not that bothered. Jean-Paul Sartre said 'Hell is other people'. I find that very true most of the time. Anyway, Welcome friend. If you'd like to chat email me or let me know.
  14. I love the JCB song. It brings a tear to my eye. It makes me think of my two boys. They keep playing it on the way to work so I have to hold back with the blubbing!
  15. The kind of person who wants to be a magistrate is normally someone who is the least suitable. Those who crave power are least fit to wield it. Hopefully she'll end up with egg on her face! (apologies if this gag has been done, I couldn't be bothered reading all 114 replies!)
