advice about senco and iep review

Recommended Posts

my dd 1st iep was due to be reviewed in july, i saw the senco in september who was rude and said her class teacher last term told her my dd was doing really well and they feel she doesnt need an iep.

HOWEVER this term she in year y1 been informed by new class teacher she in a support class, one of her iep targets was to read and recongise teddy keywords which was sent home yesterday in dd bookbag for us to help her with, only recognised e.g i, a , it out of 7 words.

The senco had told me that she had reached her targets in september but hasnt, what shall i do.

The school are being very dishonest which makes me angry.

Its typical isnt it.

What targets were on her iep previously? When you saw the class teacher did she just comment about this particualr issue or give you a progress report on all the iep targets?

Whar support does your child get now ie is she on school action, school action plus or statemented.

You need to know as it affects your response.

Schools tend to clam up if they know they are being scrutinised and so I would want this information before I complained, as to do it retrospectively would probally result in you not getting a full picture.

If your child has not achived their targets - the issue is why has the iep been removed AND HOW IS THE SCHOOL RECORDING AND MONITORING THE PROGRESS OF SEN CHILDREN. This is a issue for the school governors as something is going wrong. Whether its the senco being misled by a previous class teacher or the senco who is doing the misleading?????????

I think its a sensitive issue. if your child was on school action plus - outside agencies involved has the removal of the iep meant she has slipped back to school action which is more a monitoring view of her needs? If she is on school action would the iep have resulted in her going up the scale of need?

You need anwsers? But experience has shown for me it really helps to get the class teacher on your side, so make sure you have all the anwsers before complaining if thats the approach you want to take.

But i would definetley draw this to the attention to the school govenors as this is a whole school issue!

just to say she was is on school action, the only proffessinal involved is ot but has not yet visited her in school for suspected sensory intergration disorder

Her 2 targets were for reading which she hasnt met, she is also displaying other diffculties with academic work which isnt on her iep

I been told by senco last month the iep will be stopped in october, ive managed to get the ed psy to talk to the senco and will go in this week.

Can they take away her iep if she hasnt met one of her targets im not sure about the other one which was for sounds.

I think your right and will try talking to her teacher but im not in the schools good books which is why there is a total breakdown in communication.

Ive been told that she doing really well and progressing steadily and doesnt need an iep as she reached her targets.

Then i find out she in a support group, needs a large pencil to write with, and hasnt reached one of her targets which i told the senco but she didnt feel the same way.

Its the senco and headteacher who are preventing the truth i have no support from anyone in the school.

cant think of anyone, might try the school nurse.

The ot told me to get a review with her paed but at this present time i cant because she believed the school with their comments, i just hope the ed psy will have more luck.

I WOULD ASK FOR A MEETING WITH SCHOOL BRING AS MUCH EVIDENCE WITH ME OF HER NEEDS AND ASK FOR HER TO BE PUT ONTO SCHOOL ACTION PLUS, THIS WOULD MEAN SHE WOULD BE GETTING OUTSIDE HELP IE LEARNING SUPPORT SERVICE, ASD TEAM, SPEECH AND LANG THERAPIST (WHAT ARE YOUR CHILDS NEEDS)?

PUT IT IN WRITING IF NECESSARY.

It seems to me school are dragging their heels and letting things slide, and will continue to do so withour t encouragement. Remeber if you do decide to go down the statementing route in the future you will need as much evidence as possible, ieps, professionls reports etc.

It maybe worth taking some one with you either parent partnership - if they are any good in your area and indpendant?

I always think go with your instincts and if they are its not working you need to push.

I am amazed personally that your childs iep had nothing about social development and relating to others - did you have any imput into the iep ?

no the process of the iep was ######, they will only assess reading and writing and wont put any thing else on it.

I had no involvment in the iep and when it was done i had to sit with another parent who dd has an iep to look at it.

The school only deal with dyslexia which is why there are so many problems , the staff have no experience of sen, no training and feel they are wasting time as they dont know what they are doing.

If she is under ot can i insist she moves to school action plus, ive also decided to get a review with paed as i believe the school have mislead her and now that the ot suspects SID and poss ADD, it wont be me verus the school as the ot is very supportive and the school cant mislead her in any way.!!

My younger dd has a paed app today different one to other dd but the outcome will be interesting as they both display the same diffculites with speech, sensory and behaviour

I would advice you to have a look at the sen toolkit about ieps and how they and reviews should be conducted.

others on this forum are more knowledgable than me but I am sure in the goodpractice guidelines which tells schools etc how things need to be done, it states parents should be involved in drawing up ieps.

It is ridiculous that school are saying it should be done on such a narrow basis and it sounds as if there are big problems, its not an excuse to say they just deal with dsylexia.

Unfortunatley you will be the ones stuck as for statemetning etc you need proper ieps and infopr from the school so if they arent doing their job you will be the ones whop suffer.

Has the ed psych seen your child. I know this is normally done by the school requesting ed psych time, because it is rationed so much sencos are reluctant to call them in, as often they take it as a sign of their failure to cope!

HOWEVER as a parent and council tax payer you have the right to ask your edu psych to advice you I think its approx 1 hor a year - they dont tell people becuase of the cost implications.

I would read up and then contact school and ed psych for a meeting, preferably together and get something sorted as soon as you get back from haslf term, this cant go on!

thankyou.

Iam in contact with the ed psy she hasnt assessed dd as the school refuse to refer her, but she knows all about my concerns she has advised me to write to the school gov.

Im tempted to pay for her to assess her if it will help my dd it will cost me 250.

My younger dd had a paed app today shes 2.5yr she said she shows some unusal communication and behaviour pattern will see her in 3months and if she is still concerned will be referred to calms??

The paed was very shocked that my other dd paed has discharged her.

What is calms not sure if this is spelt right the paed said its a detailed assessment with other proffessionals.

What conditions get referred to calms im think both dd have asd

Hi hedders,

CAMHS: Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service are organised on a locality basis. These services are staffed by health professionals who specialise in working with young people and families who are experiencing emotional, developmental and psychiatric problems. Referrals to these services are normally made via your G.P. or other members of the Primary Health Care team.

The jargon buster at the top of the page is good for information like this.

I would write to the governing body with your complaints remind them that they have a duty in law to 'use their best endeavours' to see that children with special educational needs have their needs met.

Good luck

Hedders.

Just to add, paragraph 1:6 of the Code of Practice says 'LEA', schools and settings (should) work together to ensure that any child's special educational needs are identified early'.

If you believe your child has complex needs (see COP para 7:52) then you could argue that the school alone are unable to identify her needs and that she needs to be seen by an educational pychologist.
