something is very wrong

Recommended Posts

I feel upset, angry and confused

My dd is in yr 2 since reception yr i have said i believed she displays a form of learning diffculties or something the school turned there backs on us and disagreed greatly with our concerns when she was nearly 5yr over the next yr i had meeting after meeting with class teachers, senco and head i got a collection of reports from them saying nothing is wrong finally last yr her pead wrote a report saying that my dd development is delayed and the school stopped harrassing me but pead wont refer her for an assessment for autism

DD visit senco once weekly and recieves adult support in class

her class teacher said they wont contact education department as she isnt servere enough and wont get funding

Her annual report last yr was a mixture of W=working towards and S= Standred

This yr for every subject is W and only 3 Standred for drawing picture, rhymne and interaction she is falling behind and im worried how she will cope moving to junior school in sept

Last yr she had 6 Standreds for english and maths this yr they are all w along with every other subject

Confused why they keep saying there is nothing wrong and in there next breath say no point contacting education department

Hedders I'm sorry as you have lost by talking about "standards" but I had heard of W. If you are in England then she should be at level 2 by this year. If she isnt then I think that the discrepancy is sufficient to apply for a Statement of SEN. IPSEA have a great website. You can apply yourself. We applied as our son's school said he didn't need an IEP let alone a statement. Many years on he is statemented and the LEA are paying for his education at an expensive independent specialist school. Its worth the fight. You are entitled also to a second opinion on the NHS re whether she has autism. If she is classified as a more complex case you may be able to get her eferred to a tertiary centre such as GOSH or the Maudsley. Good luck. If you are in scotland then I'm afraid that your sysem is so different but IPSEA scotland should be able to help.

W, S and A is not very helpful.

Given the standard would be level 2, W could be anything from W (working towards level 1)to 1(a,b or c). You need to know the proper levels she was at at the end of YrR, Yr1 and now, in order to work out how much progress she is making (or not).

Hi had a chat with teacher also made an app for next week

Basically teacher said w means= working towards standred level which is 2 and she is on 1b it got very confusing as she was talking about 1 1c 1b 1a 1g 2 w 2c 2b 2s g dont know what g means??? so i ask for an app

Said that dd is only progressing at her own pace and this yr she has made less progress than last yr of a very small amount so they are going to increase her support even more next week as her peers are shooting ahead

Thanks to your knowledge on attainment levels which i have now reserched on doesnt match what the teacher says

Aslo spoke to parent partnership who also said w means working to twoards level 1 but teacher said she is already on 1b ??

Anyway parent partnership said have a meeting with teacher which i have arranged and also write to the pead about my concerns and we may be in a stronger postion to apply for stat assessment in yr 3 the SLT team may start intervention again as at the mo they did plan to discharge to her in oct but we havent heard from them

tried to contact ipsea all day friday but had no luck so i try them again next week

Is the teacher correct ?? or trying not to give us the full facts??

I thought w was working towards level 1 as well. If thats the case she is on the p scales.

I think you are getting the run around. What has school given you in writing about your childs levels and progress? You need to start gathering a paper trail of evidence to back up any request for stautory assessment along with detailed notes of who you spokke to, and what they said.

You need the info to prove they are lying. Have you thought about making a FREEDom of info req for your childs school records if they wont play ball.

As a National Curriculum level, W means working towards level 1, but I think the school are just using W, S and A as a shorthand for working at the expected level for their age, or above that or below that. S may be OK, but a W or an A don't mean anything without further info (how far behind or ahead are they?).

The school has to do regular assesments of their NC levels, and you need to ask for these - particularly her baseline assessment levels at the beginning of Yr R, her levels at the end of year R, at the end of Yr 1 and her current levels (concentrate on English, Maths and Science for now).

Look at the dfes site and see how the levels work.

W is working towards level 1 (so usually described by P levels).

1 covers 1c --> 1b --> 1a

then 2 covers 2c--> 2b --> 2a.

A child is expected to make at least 2 sub-levels of progress each academic year

eg: from 1c to 1a, or from 1a to 2b.

You need to make sure you get the sub-levels not just the levels, as 2 to 2 could be good (2c to 2a) or bad (2c to 2c). I would write a letter asking for these, so you have this information when you go to your meeting.

that really interesting i give the teacher a note on monday ready for app on tuesday

she did mention p scales havent a clue what that means ?

Kept talking a regional standred level not what she expects the school or class should be

Also she used her hand to show me that she made slow progress last year and then used to fingers space of 3cm of little progress this yr

at the mo she has small group work

1-1 adult support with literacy, maths, reading and writing and visit senco once weekly

This is all going to be increased next week again

They previously said she doesnt have special needs and doesnt need an IEP and informed her pead that she doesnt have any additional eductational support in school as she doesnt need it ????

What happens if they stay on the same level from previous yr or decrease/increase

1 level

I think her previous annual reports have been innacurate as her teacher informed us in oct that she found dd hadnt learnt any foundation skills in yr 1

I'm sorry to say that I think you are being given the run around. If she is on P levels and getting 1-1 etc then she should have an IEP. Ask for a complete set of her records. If they refuse you can make a request under the data protection act. You may need to get your own EP assessment so you know what you are dealing with. Then I would make a request for an Statutory Assessment. The sooner you start that the better as it takes quite a while. It does sound at least as if they are helping her- or perhaps that to is a lie. We had that situation and it only became clear when we got my son's records and an investigation took place. Good luck.

>>What happens if they stay on the same level from previous yr or decrease/increase

1 level >>

If an average child only makes one sub-level progress or stays the same, that is unsatisfactory. The teacher should have realised that they were not making enough progress and put in more help, to avoid this happening. It may be that even given all possible help, the progress is still not sufficient - in which case it may be that the child is not in the right sort of school or needs specialist help.

If a child made no progress over a year, there would have to be a very good reason (eg: missing lots of school due to illness).

There should be no way that they can decrease in level, unless a previous assessment was inaccurate.

Schools are monitored on the amount of progress each child makes, as well as the final SATs results. They call it "value added" - the difference the school has made to the child over their time at the school.

Hello hedders, The P scales were first developed to enable target setting for groups of pupils with special educational needs. The government wants the P scales to be used to report the attainment of pupils with special educational needs working below national curriculum level 1 at the end of key stages 1, 2 and 3. Schools will be required to provide information on the progress of these pupils in the form of P levels. This will apply to the national curriculum core subjects at key stages 1 and 2, and to the core and foundation subjects at key stage 3.

If you have a letter to say your daughter has a learning disability then you need to have a meeting with the SENCO, class teacher, EP and PP. Ask for a copy of an IEP and discuss a RSA. If you do not feel happy after this then you can request a statutory assessment.

I listened to the primary school my son was in and they kept saying he was just shy then I asked for the EP to be involved and was told he had delayed emotional/social development. It wasn't until year 7 he was diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder. So if you are concerned keep pushing until your happy, you know your child best. Goodluck X

You might be interested in signing this petition

http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/ASDtraining/

I will certainly sign this hun and if you don't mind if I also pass this on to other ASD sites and also a penalty charge site of where I am a team member ? Hope this is okay as I know many others will be happy to sign the petition on those sites also.

Whilst on the subject of penalty charges, on the site of where I have become a team member, I have won charges back also from being sold payment protection insurance, I now help others, so if you are interested in visiting the site this is:

http://www.mypag.co.uk/

I found this what I have won back has helped for my son's own needs.

So may be worth checking out as all is free on the site.

(sorry for breaking in the subject here) but am definately interested regarding the petition which I feel is very important).

Cheers

Di.
