rainbow queen Report post Posted July 23, 2008 Extraordinary People (Documentary) Time - 21:00 - 22:00 (1 hour long) When - Wednesday 23rd July on five The Rainman Twins. Series of absorbing documentaries exploring remarkable stories of human experience from all over the world. Savantism is a rare disorder in which sufferers of developmental disabilities, often autism, are capable of acts of genius that far outstrip their expected level of ability. In Flo and Kay's case, they each have extraordinary memories for facts and dates. Through interviews with several medical professionals, the film attempts to expose the truth behind this misunderstood condition. Mumble Report post Posted July 23, 2008 It should be an interesting one for ASD adults - especially females. From what I was reading, these are twin females - Flo and Kay - but their dx of autism is in question and the programme tonight is going to examine whether they qualify for an ASD dx or not. I'll be interested to see what the take on this is, how autism is presented and whether them being female and not stereotypically male (if that's the case ) is part of the questioning. pearl Report post Posted July 23, 2008 JP & I watched it with interest. Very likeable & engaging sisters who have had more than their fair share of sadness in life but are pretty upbeat, currently progressing to supported living. Â JP found it interesting because he has no savant skills, but some of his interests were similar in a less amazing way, he remembers dates etc. Â Was pleased the prog mentioned the stats on savantism - only 100 around the world, I hadnt realised it was that rare, but I expect because it is so fascinating, & because of Rainman, it has become many people's perception of autism as a whole. pearl Report post Posted July 24, 2008 They were, smiley. Great family too, mostly. Loved their nephew/neice. So sad their sister died so young. Really felt for the SIL who took them on, it was clearly getting too much for her. Really hope the supported living works out for them.

smiley Report post Posted July 24, 2008 Oh, thanks for the link Pearl - had a picnic today with friends, and they were all annoyed they missed it. Â I really liked the niece and nephew too - and the brother-in-law. Very chilled and accepting of the girls. I felt for the sis-in-law though, she was obviously struggling having the girls living with them. I hope they show a follow up at some point - it would be great to see the girls live independently. mandyque Report post Posted July 24, 2008 I can't believe that someone is questioning their diagnosis, they are autistic without a doubt. What amazed me is how much they were the same. I know of triplets with autism, but their ASDs present in different ways, they have their own individual difficulties and personality, Flo and Kay were identical in everything. Their obsession with Dick Clark was fascinating, and I must admit, it would be very wearing to live with that day after day after day. It was lovely how Dick welcomed them though, and accepted them as friends, I had horrible visions of it going wrong and them upsetting him with the depth of their knowledge and obsession with him. Â I would like to know how things are going for them, if they have been able to live in an independent living place and how they are managing. I think they would do wonderfully, especially as it was documented that they both blossomed when living with their sister and were taken out to socialise more. SueB Report post Posted July 24, 2008 I watched it.  Did anyone else notice near the beginning, the tale where the mum tried to kill herself and the twins by putting all their heads in the gas oven.  When the police finally arrived, they gave her a good telling off and told her not to do it again  Sue xx

bid Report post Posted July 24, 2008 It means that someone with often profound learning difficulties has just one area of real brilliance or genius (such as maths or art). Â It comes from French, and roughly translated it means 'knowledgable'. Â HTH Â Bid
